So took my 7yo off to Turnberry today for his first BE100. It looks awful on paper but he performed his little heart out and numpty rider made a hash of it!

Warmed up for the dressage nicely and amazingly stayed calm in the arena (he gets quite tense and bounces when he sees white boards!) to come out with a fabby 29.5 dressage and leading his section!

SJ looked nice and he was really pinging in the warm up, which was ultimately to be our downfall!

Popped the first 3 nicely, giving them a bit of air, then took a flier at 4 and kicked it out behind

Round to the double at 5 and jumped so big over the oxer in that we were heading for the wing of the second part and I couldnt correct it in time so pulled him out

Represented and popped through but obviously rattled him a bit as backed off number 6 and had that down too. Gave him a little pat to say it was all ok and he pinged over the last 3 with room to spare!

Id faffed about a bit over the representing and used all the arena so 12 jumping and 14 time to add.

So totally out of the running so decided to just school round the XC and have fun

Flew out the start box over the first 4. Bit of a growl at 5a (double of angled skiny palisades) resulted in me hailing a cab and riding the second part reins at the buckle and legs clamped on! Bounced him into the skinny barrels at 6a, through the water and out over the skinny barrels at 6c. Popped the rail at 7 and took a flier at the steeplechase fence at 8, up the hill to the step up, right hand turn 4 strides to a rain with brush under. Still bowling along nice and steady over the hanging log at 11, barrels at 12 and down the hill over the spread palisade at 13. Got my line right for the double of angled palisades at 14....and then it went wrong! After the right hand angled palisades you swung right into a double of left hand staggered hedges. The two combos were quite close and lots of mutterings going on from people walking the course. Anyway, Id walked my line and knew exactly where I wanted to be, except thats not where I ended up! Came to the first part and realised one stride out that I was totally wrong for the second part, landed and ran right past it

Bless him my little horse didnt know he was meant to jump it as I hadnt even pointed him at it! So came again, had my line spot on and he popped through foot perfect, clever pony

Gave myself a mental earbashing and carried on. Nice over the gate at 16, decided to take the alt route at the corner as my eye wasnt quite in so popped that and pinged over the last 2 full of running.

Totally the fault of the jockey but doesnt look good on paper! Thankfully he's here to stay so not a big deal

I'm very proud of my little guy. This time last year he had been round 2 XC courses at 2'6 and had never been round a SJ course bigger than 2'9. He really does give me his all every time and I am so pleased I stuck with him through his temper tantrums as a youngster as he's turned out to be a little star
smirk.gif
And to top it all off I had brakes, which is a novelty

Im going to spend some time practicing offset and angled doubles to get my eye in again and hopefully I wont fluff up like that again!

Thanks. End of the day he did nothing wrong and Im just a bit dissapointed in myself! Plan is to do lots of SJ over the winter and put the dodgy XC line down to experience (or lack there of! Very rusty riding!)
Im delighted with him which is what matters and he'll now have a couple of easy weeks and maybe do an unaffil to end the season on a nice easy run for us both
smile.gif

How did you get on today? Was looking for a report

It's always so hard to be forward thinking enough to get yourself spot on the line you've walked for tricky lines, everything seems to happen so fast when you're actually riding the course!

Only just in the house at 9pm! Mr FigJam working on photos and I'll attempt a report before hitting the sack, been a long day, didn't go xc until after 6pm, was starting to get worried I'd need my headtorch on!

Punk: I will keep that in mind
smile.gif
He does have so much potential, we just need to iron out a few creases and I figure finding our problems in his first season can only be a good thing as we can work on them over the winter and come out stringer next year
grin.gif

BJW: Your right! If it hadnt followed the palisades it would have been fine but where it was was rather tricky! Friend of mine (who has done a fair bit of fei stuff) was most unimpressed with it!

Thanks AutumnRose. I think he's rather handsome too but Im biased
grin.gif
Will need to do a before and after, he looked like he'd been dragged straight off the moors when he arrived 3 and a bit years ago, but he had a loose trot to die for
grin.gif

He's had his problems too but today was totally me. Sadly Im a bit neurotic and will go away and work on any problem until its 100% rock solid, and move onto the next thing!

Wow fab dressage, not surprised you're pleased with him
smile.gif

It's always easier if you know what's gone wrong and even better if it's your fault so onwards and upwards. What a handsome horsey he is!

from my point of view i didn't mind the pallisade line and hedges too much as trying to think of going novice with my horse so feel that was a good question to test control (which we didn't have) etc. BUT it was v tricky for a PN and think they should have had an alternative. then it would be fine. apparantly fence 5 caused lots of problems!!!
at least you could circle between 13 + 14!!!
