Turned out for the first time yesterday

We cannot prevent injuries but we do all we can to lessen them....!!!

We've had a lot more field injuries! but then again, I know most of the horses and their temperaments so would rather lessen that risk by not turning him out with them.... it would be hooves at dawn especially with my other warmblood! let alone the riggy little welsh I've got! The mares would just swoon as they do when any male says hello!
 
Turnout in general scares me, I think of all the reasons you have outlined everytime they go out. When they gallop and kick their heels up I half love watching and half want to look away - but I make myself turn out because they love it.
I have had cheaper horses and felt the same though.

Completely agree with this but I would change it to:

Well have to admit from a "feelings" point of view, despite not being worth a huge amount, I'd be gutted to have a serious field accident with mine, and I could never replace her...

But if you did buy like the eg a £50k horse to compete - and there weren't many about - losing a horse worth that in financial terms only - would be harder than say a £3k ex racer, which if both were new, the ex racer would be easier to replace like for like than the £50k dressage star?

However, like I said - thats if you look at it financially without any feelings attached...
 
£50k or £5k, its all relative and very much dependent on a persons disposable income. I would argue that my horse is of equal value to me, as a £50k one would be to someone who had a much higher salary.

No-one owns a £50k horse without insurance anyway.

When it comes to common sense in turning out/not turning out its equally applicable to any horse. I personally prefer to make turn out a routine affair because a once a month explosion is much more damaging than a daily plod about.

Maybe i'm too soft but I disagree. The pony that I mentioned that I put on loan was cheap to buy - I got her as a two year old and she hadn't been brought in yet so was quite wild. Although now, at ten, I would find it very hard to get a horse who is on paper just like her, I am in regular contact with the stud she is from and so I could get another 2 year old version of her VERY easily (even one related to her if I wanted). But even with all those similar two year old's - she would be impossible to replace. So how much they are worth and how common similar horses are is irrelevant - to me anyway.
 
God if I had £50k I certainly wouldn't buy a horse! Think I'd treat myself to a new car!!! Which also would not be left parked unlocked! (considering I am just about to move to the place that has been labelled the worst place to live in Britain!)

Nope! Dont think yorkshire was in the top five was it? Recipe for disaster if you ask me as first the local constabulary got labelled as the worst constabulary there is and then one of the towns they cover is the worst place to live.....

this is interesting I cringe everytime I turn my youngsters out, we had that many field injuries last year, and have had as many turning out in the sand paddock. if left in they climb the walld kicking them and kicking doors. Our coloured mare we turned down 20,000 for her and week later she sliced her leg on the fence and severed a tendon and had three hours of stitching her knee skin back togeather. fortunately she made a ful recovery and the scar is that minuet you can't see it unless looking for it and the hair fully covers it as its basically a line. we never brought her we bred her, or we would never have such valuable animals. I remember showing her once and someone asked where on earth we got a coloured like that from, I happily replied we didn't we bred her to be replied it figures then. But I disagree no matter what the value of the horse is it should be allowed some turnout each day.
 
Believe me I cringed! but he had his hoolie, calmed down and eat! So todays little adventure out, should not be like yesterday.... but if it is, what can I do.... I'll never stop a 17.2 from mowing me down in the paddock, so will just have to stand and cringe again!
 
My phone wouldn't send it!!!! not set up.... some phones come with cables some dont,,,, I just cant find the box to find out if mine did have a cable or not!

Will just have to get digi camera out and get some that way!!! At least I know where that one is!! (buried in depths of handbag along with kitchen sink!)
 

I might be totally shot down here, but my boy also came with a very hefty price tag, and he only went out for an hour a day where he used to live, as soon as I got him home, he went out in the field. And he has been out every day since. (comes in a night)
He is a competition horse and a very good one, but I would never dream of keeping him him, just because he is worth alot of money.

. And people think living round here is good. You get jack all for your council tax (police take 30 mins to reach you on a 999 call) and there is s*d all round here.... except good hunting
