Not as serious as the title suggests, but a funny story all the same.

A friend of mine has an arab x (with something) mare, who she has owned all her life. AFAIK her father bred the pony for her quite some years ago..

Anyway, the mare was always kept with a gelding. The pair of them were broken in and turned away, and never brought back into work. Unfortunately the gelding passed away a couple of years ago, but the mare is fighting fit aged now in her mid to late 20s.

The friend in question has 2 girls who are pony mad, and incidentally she still had the tack that had belonged to the pony. So last summer her and her husband decided it was time to tack up and see how it went.. she got on.. pony was fine! Not ridden in 20-odd years and she didn't put a foot wrong. So now the kids get on her from time to time (on a lead rein!) for a little hack around their fields.

Of course as the mare has never had to carry any weight in her life, so her looks rather belie her age!

That's super. :)

There must be quite a few broodmares that have several years off to have foals (although maybe not 20+ years ;) ) and then resume their ridden careers later.

Yeah it really made me laugh quite a lot when I heard about it! Couldn't believe it!

Heightwise she'd do me nicely.. but no way would I get on cos I'm sure her muscles wouldn't really be up to it- the kids are tiny, skinny wee things so they probably feel like nothing.
