Hello, helpful people.

I have a horse that might need turning away for an undecided amount of time. He's currently at livery but I'd rather turn him out somewhere he can live out, have decent grazing and companions etc. He's lived out before in a group for most of his life so would be a benign addition to a herd. The catch is he would have to be on the turned out equivalent of livery as I won't be able to find what I want close enough to me to go everyday.

Thoughts? Do people do this sort of thing in this area, where land is relatively scare? How would you go about finding such a place since it would be tricky for me to "look locally" since I don't really care which area he ends up in? I don't need a commercial outfit or a school etc., just safe turnout, someone to keep an eye on him, and some companions.

That is a very helpful link, thank-you! Definitely along the lines I might be looking for and in an easier to get to area than I hoped for! :)

I've dragged this back up as it's looking more likely it will be the plan. I've had some great suggestions but nothing that ticks all the boxes yet, so leaving everything to the last minute as usual.

If I could refine my search criteria . . .

- sandy/well draining soil

- Guildford-ish, west to say Farnborough-ish, but not carved in stone and would consider considerably outside this area for the right situation

- I would, in some ways, prefer a place that wasn't a public livery yard per se. While I would like to be able to visit the horse regularly, I want a quite place with minimal people handling him more than I want full, unfettered access. If he could be one of someone's "own" horses that would be ideal.

- Happy to pay a good rate but also happy to "trade off" some or part if that's more useful. I've had great situations before where I've traded off some of the livery for starting a horse for someone/teaching/respite care. I don't HAVE to do this and realise money is always useful, but I have a decent professional rep and while I'm not crazy money anyway, I work cheaper by trade. ;)

Hey, you don't ask, you don't get. :) I figure if I ask enough people, someone will present me with the perfect option. :D

In case anyone with a similar situation was lurking, we went with Surrey Grazing in the end. We saw a couple of lovely places but it was just the most convenient and ticked most of our boxes. I'm very impressed with their professionalism thus far and, at least in the first flush, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. :)
