I have a 5 year old LW cob cross, he was broken feb this year then hacked out couple days per week untill I got him In July. We have know got to a point where we are hacking 3days a week and schooling 3 days per week. Just wondering what people recommend or do when the youngster has been broken late? Do you still turn away or not?

I wasnt planning to yet as wanted to get some indoor shows over the winter for schooling purposes. The possibly give a couple weeks of feb/march.

Any thoughts etc????

I agree with AmyMay, if he's going nicely, i'd leave it. Especially if he's been broke late anyhow, i thought the point of turning away was to let them finish growing and to take in what they've learnt. Turning away now would be pointless!

I agree with all of the above, if he is going nicely then i would keep him going, it isnt going to harm him if you dont as we know that we get short of time in the winter so you may be riding him less anyway. I would just keep him going.

Turning them away is not the done thing for every young horse...some choose to do and with very good reasons...some dont, its really like every one has said, its a decision that can only be made entirely on the horse in question...not over all horses of that age/experiance.

If your cob is doing well, enjoying his work, he's concentrating an accepting what you ask, so long as your not boring him with too much repatative work or asking too much physically, he gets nice days off to smooch around doing what hores love best...eating, being in heard etc then carry on as you are just dont expect too much, your doing nicely by the sounds of things.
