Turning out at a new yard...

So Uno is now at his new home, been wormed and allowed out in a couple of days.

Bearing in mind he is a lively, very sociable and playful youngster (therefore he can annoy the other horses!), how would you integrate him into the field with his new mates?

We have half a day's winter turnout and plenty of room, with maybe 5-10 horses out at any one time. Was thinking he could go out for an hour or so with something sensible for the first few times, so he gets used to the field....then what? He would be suited and booted, worked prior to turnout and left hungry...might reduce the fireworks!

Mixed groups aswell, if that affects your response.

I'll be doing this next sat, though my lad is about 18 and reasonably chilled out. He is still recovering from a tendon injury so i have asked he be turned out with some quieter horses for a few months so he doesnt hoon around too much. I suppose ill just have to leave them to sort themselevs out! (keping an eye on them though)

Me too! I'm having sleepless nights about it. Short of electric fencing a section of the field, which I'm not convinced is the answer, I can't think of anything other than to let them get on with it, keep everything crossed and hope for the best.

id put him out with one or 2 at a time , once thoose are settled then add the next 1 or 2.

Also put him out after the others have settled, as they can be excited and happy to be out if in at night. Once they are, you can quietly let your boy in and wait to see what happens! Good luck x

i would actually put him out very early with one quiet horse and then add the others in later in the day... at the end of the day they will probably have a scrap at some point if there is going to be one....unfortunate but thats horses....

Is there just one big field at the new yard? If there are several fields, could you put him in one on his own but with other horses to say hello to him over the fence until you know how they will react to each other? I'm guessing you would already have tried this if it was an option though.
