I started bring my mare in at night at the end of November due to her loseing weight. Mid December she was then injured and was on box rest untill just over a week ago. Shes started going back out in the day but do you think its too soon to put her out at night again too?

I am injured and finding it difficult to muck out and lead her to and from the field, there is no one else to help me so im trying to find a sloution to my problem. Can anyone see anything wrong with turning her out at night? Do you think that there is anything i should take in to acount before i do this? Sorry my injury is to my neck but it seems to stop my brain working too

As long as she is wrapped up warm and has plenty of keep and feed, I would leave her to get on with it; she is a horse after all and needs must; your health should come first IMO. Hope you feel better soon, I know how low you can get with continual pain like that.

Well if you brought her in in November as she was losing weight i assume it was because of the weather being cold -well TBH it certainly hasnt warmed up and i wont be leaving mine out for a while yet !! Is there no one who can help u ? Can u put her on Deep litter for the time being ?

Chuck her out!!!!! i had a similar problem with my welsh pony who had never wintered out and due to my other horse which has always wintered out going hopping lame mid december poor welsh pony got kicked out there and then - hes happy so im happy! and hes still out now even tho i could swap them back round!! I would also like to add hes not a normal welsh pony - he melts if it rains! Good luck!

I bought a new pony before xmas who had come from a home where she was stabled 75% of the time, I tried stabling her at night but she got into a huge state prob as she could see all my others out, so double rugged her and put her out and she's not been in since and is happy as a lamb, my friend wintered out her tb with 3 or 4 layers on and although she had to check the rugs quite a bit he was absolutely fine, I would give it a go if her condition starts to drop off again then at least you know and you can bring her in again, but fingers x'd it won't and less stress/work for you!

Thank you MFH_09. I think maybe next week ill try and leave her out then.

swellhillcottage, Im pretty sure she droped weight due to having one of her field mates taken away (she was very attached to this one mare), she pined for a few days and then the next week she lost weight. Shes now got two pony geldings for company when out in the field which she gets on well with so i can now feed her out in the field again.

There is no one else to help me, my mum is disabled so cant even do the mucking out for me. My mare is such a dirty mare that a deep littler bed never seems to work and she will digg it all up

I collected my sec C from her producer last week November/first week December where she had been kept stabled and rugged over night. I wasn't anticipating her coming back as (I'd assumed she would be sold!!). Consequently she had to go out as all our stables were full.
So within a fortnight of coming back she bore the brunt of that horrendous snow. She was well rugged and had ad-lib haylage and she has coped fine - in fact seems happier out there! So try not to worry too much - they are horses after all!
