my horse is such an injury magnet. each time i bring her in from the field she has a new cut on her lower leg and they are just getting worse.

im tempted to turn her out in boots but what is your opinion, and if you would turn out in boots, what sort?

One wears magnetic boots (very much like tendon boots) in the field and one wears overreach boots - depending on how tough the boots are, how long she's turned out for and how hell bent she is on getting them off (we watch our friend's youngster try to pull Kelly's grass muzzle off!) but can't see any problems :)

Mine wears over reach boots on front and club boots all round, the other day her hind ones were soaking so thought would risk it and not put the hind boots on and what do you know brought her in from field with nice long cut all across her cannon bone on her hind leg.

Won't be making that mistake again!

Used to use sportabacs on an old horse of mine too, however he ripped these to shreds within weeks although rather those than his actual legs!

Wish I'd put brushing boots on last night as due to my injury magnet we aren't going to a show tomorrow! Though they rub him in summer and cause mud rash in winter. He had an accident in the field with overreach boots on once and now has a scar where the boot when into his skin!

Teddy our friend used to coat her brushing boots inside with Vaseline and her horse's legs too to stop them rubbing!
We do it with Kelly to stop her grass muzzle rubbing as unfortunately she needs it but it does cut her face after being used for a few weeks (she goes out an hour a day) x

he only time i would turn my pony out in boots would be in snow or hard frost incas he went sliiping and sliding about allthough he never wore them last year :)

Ooh will try that, thanks for the tip!

i always turn mine out with boots on as he is a very silly leggy 4y/o. he goes out with trizone over reach boots(the best boots i have had) and the Equilibrium stretch and flex training wraps my boss uses professional choice boots.

I know lots of people who turn out in over reach boots and you can get very good turnout boots specially for going out in the field because they're very waterproof, hard wearing and cover from the coronet band to just below the knee. xx

I turn out my gelding in overreach boots as he has a habit of pulling shoes off with the other foot. I would never turn a horse out with boots on its legs in summer as their legs overheat and sweat easily and I think the danger is worse from that, than any injuries. I used to use equilibrium turnout boots in winter, but they sagged and ended up like Nora Batty stockings round his fetlocks and when they got wet, their legs stayed wet. So I don't turn out in anything other than over reaches now.

A set of lightweight brushing boots should do the trick. I suppose you have to weigh up the bad - chafing, hot legs, - against good - your horse doesn't have any major injuries! Know which I'd prefer!
