I am currently looking after my neighbours horses whilst they are on holiday for 2 weeks. One pony has overreach boots on, not quite sure why but he does wear eggbar shoes so suspect he was pulling them off. He is very difficult to catch, I haven't actually got near him yet, but I am concerned the boots may rub him. Has anyone experience of boots on 24/7 causing problems, if need be I could muster some volunteers and try and catch him at the weekend, but not sure if I am worrying unneccessarily.

If he has eggbars on there's every chance the overreach boots are to try and stop him treading on the back of them and taking his shoes off.
I have had horses for years in overreach boots 24/7 if they needed them and they've never come to any harm in them, no rubbing or anything.

Probably does rather depend on how sensitive the horse is - our TB had overreach boots on when young when turned out, and they rubbed him and he still has slight marks from it years later - but he does have white legs, and I think the skin there is more sensitive (and he marks easily:-))

Well i am going to be frank here, if i were you i would be assuming they are on for a very good reason (eggbar shoes!) and wouldnt touch them. i would also assume that if you were supposed to take them off the owner would have said, i would also assume that this is normal for the pony to have them on and wouldnt be concerned about rubbing.

If i were the owner and you took them off and the pony had pulled a shoe off or something i would be very unhappy.

Boots should be no problem, one of mine has them on 24/7.

Re the sunblock - can you get hold of a paintball gun??

No problems with you being frank (or whoever you want to be :p). Seriously thought I do see your point, and normally I wouldn't interfere (and will not be doing in this case after these replies), but to put you in picture, another of their horses has a really badly sunburnt nose and gungey eyes. I asked them about this the night before they went away, which was first time I had seen them, and teenage daughter said, oh I wondered why his nose was scabby, and yes his eyes have been bad for a few days. I lent them a fly fringe and have been bathing eyes, and have also bought sunblock and putting it on, both with their permission after I offered to do this. Hadn't even noticed o/r boots or sunburnt nose on 2 other ponies as they are in different paddock until after they had gone. Last time I looked after them the owners expressed amazement I had actually gone over to the field twice a day to check them, she thought I would just look across from the bedroom window.

BC, would have to be a damn good shot, nearest I can get to him is about 10ft :(

Mine's been turned out in overreach boots for years to stop him catching his front feet/shoes, I've never had any problems :)
