Who is turning there horses out all winter?

who is keeping them in all winter?

I'm thinking of not clipping my boy out this year and turning him out without a rug on in the day and in at night with a stable rug. do you think that would be ok?

my boy is a welsh cob X

and also likes to destroy all the fenching if he had a rug on

I keep my horse in all winter, I think that would be fine tho, dephending on the weather- he might be a bit cold during the day but the weathers is so not predictable :L

I turned my lad out all winter for the first time last year and he loved it. Stood out in the worst weather inc snow even though he had a field stable to use. Gave him ad lib hay and a medium weight rug and he was fine. He has been out 24/7 for over a year now and it really suits him....and me!

He would be fine, natives are designed for bad weather

Mine will be clipped, out during the day and in at night as long as the fields are not under water/snow or frozen!
Mine get pretty rugged up though.

Mine's will be out 24/7 with a medium weight rug on. I tried to put a heavy weight rug on her last year (in the snow!) and it was too hot for her. She's a cob X TB and thrives on being out all of the time.

should be fine, mine is clipped (blanket or full) and spends most of winter in a 200g turnout out in the day and a 300g stable rug on at night.

they are out 7am to 5pm ish.

I think he would be fine during the day without a rug but when he comes in soaking wet and filthy how do you propose to put a stable rug on him. Also in the morning he's going to be toasty with his rug on and you'll rip it off and chuck him out in the cold...I woud say rug 24 hours or no rug at all.

Mine is going out for his annual hols next week, he will not be rugged unless really nessacary

He however does not get a real winter coat, as being 3/4 tb his winter coat is like some natives summer coat

he gets back shoes taken off and kept out at night if we can, although may not be possible.

When he comes back in, he will get clipped and depending on the weather a MW rug

then he starts work and gets shoes on

If anything I would put a lightweight turnout on him when he was out and not bother with a rug at night.

Like someone has already said how are you going to put a stable rug on a wet muddy horse?

If he's not clipped he won't really need a stable rug when he's inside and sheltered anyway.

Mine lives out 24/7 in the winter with a MW rug. If we have snow or sub zero temperatures then he will get a fleece under this. They have natural shelter as well as a man made shelter so happy as larry!

My cob is t/o during the day over winter - 7am - 5 ish - and is fully clipped but she never has anything heavier than a mw on and only has a stable rug on when it gets really cold as she sweats just standing still in the stable. I didn't clip her one winter to see how she got on - never had anything more than a lw during the day and never had her stable rug on at night as her coat is about 3 - 4 inches thick!! I clip her because she sweats to much when worked and then had to dry off before being turned out which takes forever!!

Mine goes out in the day and comes in at night in winter. She has no shelter in the field so is rugged appropriately and will be clipped so appropriate stable rug at night too.

I think he would be fine with no rug 24/7?!

In my youngen days we never rugged our horses - there were mainly WBs at my yard (on the continent) and my little girl who was a cross of some sort. They just grew thick coats.

My girl now, a full TB, just shivers when I think of using no rug so she gets well rugged during the winter but goes out every day unless it is pouring down all day or it gets too icey to get to the field safely. But she is a TB, I would think a native would be totally fine naked at all times...

Mine is going out 24/7 for the first time this year too

I agree with others that it will be difficult to get a rug on at night so i'd either go with no rug or wear one all the time

Out through the day as long as it's not terrible with rugs on and in at night, one of mine will have a blanket clip the other will have a full and the little yearling lives out all year with a light-middle weight on through winter

Of course your welsh cob x will be fine. He'll be much happier out!

Mine have always lived out 24/7 all year round. Some of them have done BSJA all winter so have been trace and hunter clipped and yet still lived out (modern rugs are great things!). None of them have lost any weight or looked miserable once. One of these horses is a Luso x TB imported from Portugal so not at all suited to our winters in NE Scotland but he copes perfectly and loves being out, as do most horses!

I've always rugged all mine the whole winter unless they are natives as I find that it's hell to get a rug on them every night as once they're wet, they take ages to dry.

I'm sure he'll be fine Sugarplum. As someone else has already said, he'll probably be happier! My Arab mare used to winter out - she was rugged but was out day and night and was far happier than being brought in.
