My 5 year old thoroughbred mare has just recently started living out. She's decided to be an absolute cow to turn out, only the past week or so. Shes 16hh and i'm quite short, shes just started to when i go to take her head collar of she'll go and try and run off, and if i tell her off she'll rear. She never used to be like this and she isn't anywhere else but the field.

Does anyone else have experience with a horse like this? If so do you have an opinions or advice? Thanks.

my old mare used to do this. its prob just excitement at goin out. what i used to do was show her a titbit before i took her head collar off and she was happy to stand i got it off for a sweetie. she was also a tb. hope this helps a bit x

Treat is definately a good idea, we do this with a shetland stallion, everyone says dont treat shetlands as encourages them to nip etc, but we find reward training fantastic with him. I would say make sure you give the treat at the correct time, ie when shes been good, don't reward her for mucking around, take her head collar off and when she stands nicely for you to do this then reward her, she will soon realise being good = a treat! xxxx

And don't be telling her off. Just stand her up nice and go to remove the head collar and, if she faffs around, just stand her up again until she learns that she isn't released until she stands quiet. Then praise her and let her away.
