hi just a querry about how long people turn out thiere lamietic horses, mine had it at the beggining of the year and he's not that fussed about being out so all i do is turn him out a hour in the morning b4 work and a hour in the evening, and at weekends someone turns him out for me about 8 and i go get him in 3 hours later, just wondering if this is to much, the grass is still fairly good and we dont think he got it from to much grass as he got it in winter when he was hardly out at all! he's been fine for 4 months, im only asking as the mare he goes out with is in season and when ive brought him back in this week he's gone mental in his stable all day cos his girlfriend is out, thought i might leave him out untill lunch time and get him in on my lunch break, would 5 hours out be to much? how much is to much? and what do u do with urs? any help would be helpfull! thanks!

Its very difficult to say how long is too long as all lami's are different! I have 2 ponies who've had it years ago. One is extremely prone, she literally has grass for 15 mins a day otherwise is in a hardcored yard with hay whereas my other pony goes out every night (and in yard with her during day) with no problems. The mare gets pottery if anything more than 15 mins!

Id just be wary just now as there is often a last "flush" just before winter... If I were you, Id likely try and fence off a little bit and leave him in there 24/7?

he's normally ok with coming in after being out for an hour, but because his mare is in season (he's very riggy!) he cant stand being in, trashed his satble and ended up in a lathered mess for 3 days! tried putting him in a bald field nx to thiers with a gelding and as soon as i put him in there he was judgeing jumping the fence (saw him jump this fence 3 times last year to get to a mare!) to get back to her, maybe ill just have to ask for the mare to stay in with him to keep him happy, i only loan him and the owner of the mare is his owner, she understands what he's like just seems a bit unfair for her to stay in as well!

My little one is in at the moment, bu, when he's absolutely fine, he will be out for short periods, gradually building up to out at night, in during the day

my lammi prone boy is out all day on stripped grazing and in at night with soaked hay. Most of the time it is good for them to be out on little grass or bare paddock with hay so they can walk around and get new fresh blood circulation to the lammi, Of course if the horse is crippled or got rotation is should be in on a deep shavings bed with vet care!
