I turn my tb out in over reach boots .. she lives out 24/7 but I make sure that I take them off and brush round them every day checking for sores etc.

She seems fine in them, I think in the summer (or sooner) I might put tendon boots on her fronts, just because at the moment shes been whizzing round the field like a looney so I might put them on just to try protect her legs a little bit more!

To be honest I see no problems in them being on in the field aswell, aslong as there checked everyday etc.

Mine are out 24/7 without boots. I know any horse can knock itself, but personally I'd only put them on if I knew my horse was bit clumsy or messed about with others in the field or overreached ofc. One of my customers horses kicks itself when it is standing still let alone moving about, so I reccomended she used them as she wasn't already. It's legs are a right mess, silly TB.

mine usally very good but thing i might be safer that sorry its one of the others in the field that have done it as he had blood on his legs and mine has the cut :(
thanks for replays

i cant see it being any good for the horse tbh - the heating of the legs and pressure for prolonged periods would really worry me - i'd rather take the risk of a kick
btw mine lives out 24/7

I think over reach boots are different.

I would never turn out in brushing boots for a prolonged period, even the air cooled ones. It can heat up the tendons and cause rubbing and sores.

I read somewhere, sorry can't remember where, that wearing boots warms the tendons up and can make them more susceptible to injury.

As others have said the heat can really damage the legs!! Added to that the fact that if a but of grit gets underneath the boot it can then rub on the leg and cause a nasty infection - I learnt that the hard way as did my riding instructor/yard manager with her mare after leaving boots on just overnight. The advice for boots is a max of 4 hours at a time :)

I dont turn out in any boots. My TB is out 24/7 in the summer and comes in the evening in the winter...

I ride in boots, but, he is quite nonchalant in the field... They do mess around sometimes but three out of the four horses are veterans and the other boy is 11.... IMO you can only wrap them up so much. I do turn out in bandages if we have been XC or working particularly hard - normally keep them on for 24 hours with a change in the morning after...

Our ponies are also out 24/7. No boots or bandages ever. They cope fine. They are mostly all in the one paddock together, somtimes run around. I worry more about one of them slipping and straining something, than a bump. I would worry about pressure or heating from boots, as well.
