How soon after a field has been fertilized do you turn out your horses again?

Our fields have just been done, I always thought they were fine after some decent rain. But my friend says its 10 days regardless of weather. They chap who came to do the job didn't know!?

As far as I know it all depends on the type of fertiliser you use.

I used to live by the rule about the rain, but dew will do just as good a job to disolve it & better in some respect as you wont get the surface water run off.

I have heard that modern fertilisers (dependant on type) are ok to be spread and grazed the following day. Best to contact an agri-supplier/ wholesaler & ask them.

We turned ours out a week later, i want that happy about it but the yo seems to know what shes talking about and the horses have been fine i guess it depends on what you use as on another yard we had to wait three months but the field was in a really bad state!

The only way you can know for sure is to check the Manufacturers instructions for the specific product used.

We have had our field fertilized and our farmer said they could go on it after rainfall. We did however leave it 2 weeks just to be on the safe side and to give the field that extra time to rest.

Steady yourselves! The fertiliser used at the yard i'm on is put down while the horses are in the field. Apparantley it's a fairly new one that is safe for horses. I was very sceptical at first so was going to bring mine in but when i got to the yard the tractor was already in the field. The same stuff has been used for 3 years now and all the horses have been fine.
There are around 35 horses at the yard all in different fields but only during the summer. During the winter we use outdoor pens so the fields aren't churned up. This means there is no mud fever and none of the horses hang around the gate standing up to their knees in muck looking miserable.

I can only assume that the fertilizer, used on the yard that you are at, is an organic fertilizer?? I don't know of any chemical fertilizer that is safe to use whilst animals are still grazing in the fields, however being a farmer, I'd be very interested to know the name of the one used at your yard

The word fertiliser turns my blood cold. Just moved away from a yard where the fields were fertilised to one where there never has been fertiliser. Got a laminitic cob, I blamed the fertilised grass.
