My horse is coming into her 4th week box rest and has been brilliant. We've been allowed short walks in hand just to stetch her legs and pick at some grass and shes had her moments but has been mainly good. Shes going to be out of work weeks and we are now allowed turnout alone in a small flat area and Im planning to move yards to somewhere where she can do this. Timing stinks I know but if I stay where I am, shes going to be stuck in for months. Shes a young horse and I expect her to explode. My vet has given me Sedalin to get her there but I forgot to ask about her having it for the initial turnout. Im more concerned about her eating whilst slightly dopey???
Its years since Ive been in this position, so apologies for what may seem a numpty question.
Any advice please?

I think depending on the horse you give them a whole tube to keep them really calm, I have Arabs and I find half a tube is enough to keep them calm for the first time turnout after a time in.

If you think she will bomb around make a very small pen for the first few days at least that way she can't pick up speed.

pick up the phone to your vet if you're concerned. I have used it to take the edge off when reintroducing turnout and I find it is nowhere near as sleep-inducing as IV sedation. By the time they are outside they wake up a bit anyway. So personally that aspect wouldn't concern me, but if you are able to I would echo the suggestion to set up a smallish pen to discourage any zoomies.

I have Turned using sedaline many times they have no issues with eating if I don’t know how they react to I practise first with half a tube in the stable .
I kept one sedated most of the time with sedaline when he was first in plaster he had haylege the whole time and was fine .

Great thank you. We are planning on a small taped off pen within the field, sorry I didnt make that clear. Its a good way for her to meet the other horses too before she can go out properly with them. Vet said to give her 1ml to get her there? I think I better have a trial run first lol. I remember giving my boy 2ml years ago when he fractured his leg during his recovery and that knocked him out but he got wise to his walks and it didnt work once his adrenalin kicked in.

I used not even a quarter sedalin when I turned my then four year old out after 4 months of boxrest. He was fine, took the edge off enough for him to just settle and eat. Had a little trot and that was it, back to eating. Used it for 3 days, gradually reducing it to none and it worked fine.

We used sedalin to turn the exracer out after box rest, with no problems eating and no explosive behaviour. Because grass is soft and easy to chew they don't cause themselves any problems, or at least the risk is much lower. It's hay/haylage and chaff and hard feed that you need to worry about really. I'd hesitate to turn out on IV sedation though! But my vet did suggest it when he sedated him to take the stitches out so obviously it can be done! We weren't expecting it though so we didn't have his paddock ready. Else I might have been tempted, I was so tired of the box rest by then!

Used it many times on horses coming off bid rest without a problem. Using more won't make the horse more sedated but it will last for longer. I give it at least 45 minutes before turning out.

We used iv sedation occasionally for the first time turning out after box rest at the yard I worked on, according to the vet grass is fine whereas we'd take hay out if they'd been sedated in the stable. We'd then use sedi 45 mins to an hour before turnout for at least a couple of days after the first time.

I've used sedalin when turning out for the first time. Never had any issues with eating. You find it takes a few days to work out the best dose and once they are wired ready to go on out it isn't as effective.

My mare had pen turn out after 3 weeks box rest and vet said to give 4 notches, she's a 14.2hh chunky cob and this was just enough to keep her quiet without her being wobbley or too dopey.

It shouldn't knock them for six like the IV sedation does so you'll be fine! It just takes the edge off. Make the pen small enough so excitable zoomies are kept to a minimum :)
