Hi - I'm looking for some help with this. We have been competing successfully at agricultural shows and are now moving on to some affiliated classes but there seems to be a lot of discrepancies in turnout.

Horse is non-native, 157cm skewbald gelding. He is middle/lightweight But not a fancy Warmblood!

I'm an adult rider.

Until now, he has been in plain hunter bridle with Pelham and I have been in green tweed with beige jods, black boots & gaiters, black show hat, brown gloves & brown show cane.

I seen lots of coloured browbands, buttonholes etc and riders in blue jackets etc.

So....

Should my boy have a coloured browband?
If so, I presume a matching tie would be good - are scrunchies just for kids?
Am I correct in tweed?
If Navy jacket is preferable, is black hat still acceptable?

I have read that black tack/hat are not correct - I really can't afford to change these!!

Any other observations on our attire would be gratefully received!

Thanks for reading!

Wear exactly what you have worn so far - the others are showing hacks and show ponies! If yours is a hunter, then show him as a hunter! No scrunchies, browbands or buttonholes ... !!!

Technically, for women, navy hats are correct no matter what colour the jacket. Black or brown tack will be fine. If buying from new, then go for brown, but don't change it if you already own it. You should wear spurs for adult classes.

I would imagine him as a soild colour i.e bay and then decide what class you would take him in and show him to that type.

If you decide hunter then stick with the tweed and plain tack, if you decide riding horse then a coloured browband and tweed jacket is correct, if hack then navy jacket and coloured brow band.

Personally I prefer coloureds in plain tack as I think they are busy to look at anyway and a coloured browband can be too distracting alongside the markings.

A navy hat would be preferable as well and brown tack as you mentioned, but these can always be updated bit by bit as you can afford :)

Hard to tell from such a small pic, but he looks like he has a fair amount of bone, so I would say he would be more hunter than riding horse. Stick with what you have him in :)
