Hi,

OH is starting to do a little showing with his mare as a build up to doing some breed classes with her. She is to be turned out as a hunter and the classes are judged as hunter classes.

I'd like to do quarter marks on her as I think they will really set her off, but I want to do them well!! I don't like the plastic sheet ones (the ones I have seen always look like you have used a plastic sheet), so want to do them by hand, please let me know how to do different shapes and get a great effect please?!! She is a gleaming bright bay so her colour helps me out alot, I just want to get my bit right! What shapes would you recommend to help give the appearance of a better second thigh?

Tea and biccies as thanks!

If you are doing hunter classes, plain and simple marks look best. Use a damp brush to wet the quarters before starting, then take a fine toothed comb to do two/three 'stripes' on the top of the quarters and then a stiff body brush to do plenty of large sharks teeth.

This is my point to pointer sporting the markings I am trying to describe.

Wow, those two look amazing!!

Showjump, how do you get those rectangles within rectangles on the top of his rump like that? They really look fab! Need a proper idiots guide though - please, with glasses of pimms to bribe?!!

This is a video of me doing quarter marks very quickly so far from perfect and with a body brush much easier to use a comb but gives you an idea.

That is absolutly bloomin' brilliant, thank you!! Do you prep the coat with anything first? The brush strokes seem to mark really well, much better than I have managed?! I have a nit comb that I use to get my plaits nice and smart, would i be better using that for the marks than a body brush then?

I also don't like using a comb for blocks, best thing is a decent natural bristle body brush (I have a ridiculous attachment to my quarter marking brush)
So to start with i wet the coat with a sponge quite liberally then i squirt gel onto a sponge and wipe it all over where i need it (personally i find shockwaves extreme hold the best!)
Then i mark up in a similar way as small hunter shows in her video, remembering to be very firm on the brush to get crisp lines.
Once that has been done i set mine with supreme sparkle or such like.
Here's a photo of how hunter quater marks should look, there is actually a 3rd top sharkteeth however due to the lighting and shadow on the photo you can't see it!!
Hope that helps a bit. ;D

Do be objective when doing quarter markings.

By this I mean ensure they are going to enhance the animal - and not detract.
Clever use of positioning can make a slight goose rump seem more rounded, slightly off line can make it worse etc.

Sometimes it can be easier to leave the top squares altogether........ or try putting them closer/wider/further forwards/further back - that half inch may just do the right thing for your horse.
Take photos after practice - and get a good (trusted) horsey mate to give it the once over too.

Happy showing :)
