Hi there, I have taken on an old dart moor mare who definitely needs a new rug! A not used to looking for rugs so small and am having trouble finding the right thing.

What I would really like is :
Detachable neck
Medium weight but ideally the option to add liners
Tough ish outer
Good quality.

It's not that much to ask is is? I know I could get a Rambo Optimo ( had for my ridden horse) but that does actually seem a bit excessive!

Many thanks

I have the Horseware Rhino rugs which have the option of using liners but are cheaper.

I ordered a lightweight no-fill recently from Horserugs4u at half price. I already have a 200g with detachable neck and a 100g liner so I now have lots of options.

I also like the fact that they aren't heavy for the horse to wear or for me to take on/off.

I thought they had gone bust? Hope you get your rug!

Another vote for premier equine, they are quite long but NEVER slip even when they roll, I have a 40g one which has a detachable neck and is very warm and have a liner for it aswell. They are very well made just not 100% sure if they do small pony ones. Weatherbeeta did a very good rug which my little pony has, the tri-star, they are now discontinued but you might get one on the internet.

Amigo all the way ... I use them on my Shetland pony. Have for years.
However he's 27 and his heavyweight Rambo is wearing, and he's dropped weight for the first time this winter, so today have just ordered the Amigo Bravo 12 Heavy, plus neck cover in the 'Pony' cut.
He takes a 4ft 6 (i.e don't be guided by he size chart as they'd have him in a 3ft6.
The Bravo comes in Lite (no fill) 200grm and 400grm. You can also buy under rugs that attached to the neck fixings.
They're also lightweight, and some of my no fill rugs are on their 3rd winter.
Key thing is to shop around, as there are some in the sales at the mo.

Just make sure if you order a 'pony' version, that's what you get, as the cut is slightly different on the pony version compared to the same equivalent in the standard rug - that's what they say anyway :)
Just google, google and google :)

Still with Horseware or the older Fal rugs, both never move or rub and I find they are not heavy even when wet.
Watch out for Premier Equine, their customer service is not good. Also their rugs are very heavy when wet.

I think PE did go through a spell where their customer service was poor so that might be why there's differing opinions on it.

I have an ageing mare who has been using a rambo duo for 2 winters and I removed it yesterday in a fit of rage i favour for the trusty old weatherbeeta. Both my horses have rambo duo's and i find they slip constantly leaving the under rug exposed which it then soaks up water. The neck rugs are very short too.

For my section A filly I have had a tough time getting rugs to fit as you need rugs to fit ponies, not scaled down horse rugs. I have heard that Amigo are good for ponies (although I have a few for my horses and they slip).

I have just bought a discountinued Fal rug from ebay - maybe a good place to look?

I looked on PE the other day and the smallest sizes were 5"6

Rambo originals with the leg arches, tough, any weight and stay light even when soaked! My old boy has the lightweight on 24/7 with the option of liners and has a separate neck. Hate rugs that are heavy. I go up a size in rambo as my boys are both chunky. I like the fastenings with the two clips, stay high round the neck and don't seem to rub my lot at all, even wearing them 24/7.

Have a look at Ruggles equestrian. I just got one for an aged Shetland and it fits well. It never moves even on my mare who is a bit lop sided due to arthritis. They have a good range.
