What turnout does your horse have?

I am trying to get a better picture about whether my turnout expectations are realistic or if I need to sacrifice everything else to get it.

So answers please so I can see what the rest of the forum have.
 
We can turn our horses out whenever we want to - it's been 24/7 during summer and lo will probably be out from 6.30am to 6pm during winter. She could go out 24/7 in winter if I wanted her to, but the other horses come in so I doubt I would leave her out there on her own

We have individual turnout ... our little shettie can see other horses in it's field but they are all separated by electric fencing and you can get to each paddock without having to come near any other horse - I specifically set up the fencing for this. It suits me brilliantly as I always have a toddler in tow when I'm up the yard.
 
Out 24/7 summer, in at night in the winter if wanted. Group turnout :) Hate individual turnout and would never keep a horse in 24/7 unless box resting.
 
My two are kept at home and can groom over the fence but cannot be kept in the same field as my 17 hander is a (behavioural only) rig (at our last livery yard he worked his way through the entire yard of horses trying to kill them). He cant cope with anything in his field, pheasant, nothing, But loves a groom over the fence.

My little mare is happy as long as she can groom with him for hours over the fence. But would wet her pants if in the same field!

So sometimes indiv turnout can be necessary, altho I think it should only be done when other options exhausted and as a last resort.

In the summer mine are out 20 hours a day but come in for 3-4 hours in the morning so I can ride the mare (gelding retired) but also cos we are a high risk grass sickness area so it is recommended to be off grass completely for a period every day.

In the winter the horses are out in the daytime, length varies from 8 hours (all the daylight we get in winter) to 1 hour( depending on how long it takes me to dig from the house to the stables and the stables to the field (we are in the Cairngorms!)
 
Group of four, out all year round, unless they are in hard work or hunting, then they are in at night in the winter.

Lucky that I have my own land, but wherever I was I would like the choice.
 
Out 24/7 all year, herd of four (three mares, one gelding), but I'm at a private yard not livery. When I was at livery it was unlimited turnout, single sex herds, but I had one stable per horse so I could bring them in at night if I'd wanted to.
 
My two young (ish) ones stay out all year round with a field shelter except for when the weather is truly horrific (ie flash flooding, volcano eruptions, hurricanes :)) in a herd of 4.

But my oldie will stay out 24/7 in the summer and then come in overnight during the winter.

None of those really

Yard offers single sex herd turnout 24/7 365 if you want it, with a mixed restricted paddock option most of the summer.

My mare usually comes in at night Xmas- end April, comes in during day May-Oct and lives out 24/7 until Xmas.

This is because she is a good doer who won't keep muzzle on in summer and she asks to come in overnight in winter when it is really muddy, but I like the fact that turnout never restricted by the yard and it is my choice what I do. If she was happy to stay out all winter that'd be great - but her friends in the herd come in overnight so she insists on it too.

We do have some horses out in pairs in small paddocks and also have a medical paddock (which mine is in on her own atm following surgery).

I wouldn't go to a yard with only individual turnout or one that told me when I can turnout now, have done in past and hated it.
 
Ours are out 24/7 during the summer and in in the winter although we have small turnout pens which we can put nets in they can have a plod about in and i think they are allowed in them 3 hours per day plu we have a lunging pen two outdoor schools and an indoor so i tend to lunge for 20 mins per day if i dont have time to ride or i am unable to bring bk in out the pen ( or OH / FRIEND IS UNABLE TO EITHER) not ideal but better than nothing
 
Seren lived out 24/7 all year round in an individual paddock, I would bring her in sometimes but not often, she much preferred being out with hay.
Nell is the same, out 24/7 as she prefers it and she will winter out in her own paddock. There are others who stay out 24/7 all year round nearby so its not like she has no one around her either

Out in day, in at night, herd of 3 in summer.
Out in sand paddock (or indoor if really wild) with one other for 2 hours a day. Also on walker 2 days a week 20 mins each time. I can have walker everyday if required.
 
Out 24/7. I have a stable but she has not spent the night in for at least two years now. In group of 4 mares. They have a lovely shady summer field - about 4 or 5 acres and a huge winter field approx 15 acres. Flexible as there are two groups of mares that have either more or less grass so I can swap her to the other if needed.

Mine are out 24/7 in the spring/summer/autumn tho might have the odd day in if temps are sweltering, or the odd night in if its been hammering it down with cold temps (usually April or late Oct early Nov)

Winter, mine come in when I get fed up of poo-picking in the dark & then they are in at night & out at day (out for 8 - 12 hours) till early spring or when fields are ok to be wallowed in 24/7.

My 2 are together, lovely liverys GF is in his own paddocks.
 
Mines out 24/7 (but has option to come into stable) and he only comes in at night usually night before comp or if field is under water.
He events off the field to 1*.

He doesn't go out on his own as he lives with 2 donkeys :)

mine has individual turnout, 24/7 during summer, can bring into stable if need to.
individual turnout all day and in at night during winter.

yard owner prefers them in at night during the winter and so do i.
 
You didn't actually have our option so I voted for the nearest.
Ours are out 24/7 in summer and in overnight in winter. We've kept horses for almost 40 yrs and that's what we've always done. They go out for a few hours even in the worst weather and we are on top of the Pennines, so if we can any-one should be able to.
 
I generally have always kept mine out 24/7 all year round together, however at the moment this isn't the case with one of them and all vary as to what type of turnout they get depending on their needs!;

- My competition horse is on box rest (serious tendon injury) so is stabled at night but out in a 6ft high steel fenced area during the day purely so he can have grass and make life a bit more bearable for him.
- A friends competition horse arrived yesterday, he's in for me to try and sell for her, so he's in his own paddock 24/7. She's said he can be a bully and so I dont want mine getting hurt and there's no point risking putting him in with mine when he may not be here very long.
- My 13.2hh retired pony is in a small paddock during the day and in the yard (with the shetland) at night, he has cushings thus is lami prone so this is what I find works well for him.
- The shetland stays in the yard all the time at this time of year as she is very lami prone (I think she's likely cushings too). I let her out into the small paddock for 20 mins twice a day while I'm mucking out etc. but otherwise she's in the yard (a large hardcored yard which my stables open into) with permanent access to hay obviously.

All of mine are right beside one another though so they can touch other over the fence. I'd much rather keep them together as a herd by choice though, however with them all with such different requirements at the moment its just not possible. I always try to give them some time with others though like I'll put the shetland in with the one on box rest sometimes so he has proper contact.
 
Out from about 8-4, in at night, all year, and on individual turnout. She can't be turned out in a herd because she tries to eat other horses. She also finds changes in routine stressful, so switching between 24/7 and in at night turnout seasonally doesn't work for her. She also dislikes the rain and the insects, so she prefers to be in during the evenings anyway, even during the summer.
