Fudge is able to be turned out again, he will be going straight back into a herd situation over night and be given sedalin for the first couple of days until he is settled.

As he has just recovered from a sprain, should I bandage or purchase some turnout boots to use to offer extra protection for a while?

has he been walked out in hand to help him get used to being out of the box?
we followed proceedure of....
-walk out in hand a couple of times a day for picks of grass (getting groomed whilst out in the sun - and keeps you entertained!)
-sedated for first turnout - first turnout was usually with something bombproof (like a donkey)
-turned out with something supportive- in this weather I'd probably bandage to get the right tension & then cover carefully in gaffa tape so it doesn't get too wet/hacky - although it's not like your protecting an open wound so don't worry
-left for turnout for 2 or 3 hours - then back in again, told they were a good horsey and put to bed - all nice and calm

I'd suggest if there's any ones likely to cause a storm in the herd that you catch them so the rest are quite
and how long has he been on box rest? dependent on how long - i'd ask if turning out for an overnight period straight away was a wise choice....

I discussed options with my vet and various others and feel it is best to turn out straight back into the herd situation.

He's been having 20 minutes of in-hand walking and grazing a day for the past couple of weeks and has been on box rest for five weeks Thursday (he was being worked 5 times a week and out over night previous to the injury).

Going out at night will mean he is in a small group of 4 or 5, which he is the boss of so the only problem I'm anticipating is much sqealing and stamping with the other Welsh gelding. He will be last out and first in which I hope wil help.

I could turn him out for two of three hours each evening this weekend (3 days) and see how things go before turning him out for 11 hours.

The vet said not to bother with bandages, but I feel I would like to have a bit of extra support.

What is the reason for box rest out of interest? I am just starting turnout post 4 months box rest post very minor suspensory inflamation, I'm up to 50 mins hand walking a day and am now knocking that back to resume riding and my vet still does not want T turned out with another horse for a month or so after we get him used to turnout.

A sprained fetlock (swelling gone completely and just 3/10 lame in trot after five days in), scans and x-rays showed nothing more sinister. That sounds about right for a minor suspensory injury, horse did this eariler in the year too.

I turned my horse out with Sports Medicine Boots after box rest. It helped reassure me a bit as they do offer strike protection though obviously no boot can support the tendons. I would suggest overreach boots too.
