Ok, thinking about having a go at this now...at RC level (to begin with at least!). Just wanted to check I've got the right idea, as round here even at RC level people are pretty competitive and take it all rather seriously

Me - Hacking jacket, black hat with flesh coloured harness, shirt and stock (coloured one ok or not?), beige breeches, black boots/gaiters, spurs, (can I get away with no cane? She's not overly keep on whips of any sort!)

Her - got a GP saddle, know no boots etc for showing phase. Is a waterford snaffle ok or would a pelham be better? Can use 2 reins, never put a double bridle on her before so not too keen on trying that yet. Got a nice bridle, but doesn't show her face off to best effect, would it be worth getting a cheaper one with a big flat noseband, as she does have quite a big head!! Or even seeing if we can't get a noseband for her bridle? Or do you think it won't make too much difference?

Can you tell I've no idea about this showing lark!!

ETS Just realised I should probably have put this in the Comp Riders section....sorry!

I don't show much but your set up sounds fine. Pelham with two reins best I should think, and a flat plain bridle, if you have one! Good luck and have fun.

I just got a bridle made to measure, very cheaply, will post pics when I knock the mud off the horse! Anyway, he does odd bits too, like just a noseband, website is www.mrhsaddler.co.uk

Technically you should have a blue hat - But I dont think anyone will care.....

You can get away without a cane, I think it would be more damaging to carry one in your case by the sounds of it!

I've only ever shown in a snaffle, no-one has ever commented, but technically a rugby pelham would probablly be the best bet, if you didnt want to use a double bridle!

Your probably best off with a flat noseband & browband; judges often comment, if you dont have one. You can usually buy them seperatly from a saddler, for very reasonable prices!

I would change the noseband to a flat one. You can buy them seperately...]

If your horse goes nicely in a snaffle, then leave it in that. Judges (unless you are at the top level) are happy to see horses that go nicely in a snaffle. Personally I HATE pelhams. If you want to use 2 reins, use a double. (rant over)

I wouldn't worry about the cane, I don't carry one with my boy.

With a hacking jacket, your tie/stock should be coloured.... Although I actually think it's more correct to wear a tie (They do in M&M's). I may be wrong though!

Also for you remember hair net, no jewelry, except VERY small studs in pierced ears and plain stock pin. I understand either stock or tie acceptable but to tone with your jacket. I think hat colour is optional.

Definately wear a tie, stocks are not correct for showing apart from evening performances at big shows. A snaffle, double or pelham are all acceptable for working hunters, whatever she goes best in is fine.

Bridle wise, a plain flat bridle would be better, but why don't you see how you get on in a couple of shows before splashing out? If you don't find showing is for you, you won't have wasted any money, but if you find you're doing really well you might want to spend more.

We always used plain flat hunting style bridle (Kincade do one for £30 which is cheap and cheerful but good enough!). Stick to snaffle, ours was in snaffle and hunting breastplate up to County level and then BSPS champs.

Red/burgundy spotty tie seems to be the most popular, shirt can be cream to match jods.
