My five year old is struggling with her heavyweight turnout rug - rubbing at the points of shoulders and I think starting to cause very mild tightness across the tops of her shoulderblades. My usual prevention tactics - silky bib, coat shine sprayed on rug and shoulders - aren’t working so I’m thinking it’s her rug restricting her too much. She does have very big shoulders and brilliant posture which means she really will be moving them each stride. She also lives out overnight so her rug is on her for more hours than it’s not. So, time for a new rug, but I want to buy well once now and just get it right for her. She has two both contributing to this, shires without darts and an old premier equine which has short darts. What’s the best bet for giving her shoulders as much movement as possible whilst also being cut to keep her warm rather than her chest hanging out?! She’s Irish, on the lighter side of middleweight. Thank you!

Rambo if you can afford. Weatherbeeta, or for quality but bargainous Gallop. All fit my Freisian with huge shoulders well. You need something with long darts I think.

Lansdown, seldom mentioned but absolutely brilliant shoulder shaping and good materials (though not quite as amazing as they were back in the day when insulation was 100% Thinsulate!).

Big horse shop (although think they're totally OOS of just about everything by look of website atm) or I've just got an Amigo Bravo XL which is liner compatible which seems to accommodate the large neck & shoulders of my Highland.

Bucas Irish turnout suits my big shouldered IDx. I think the power range has the shoulder darts too. 1200d outer shell so quite hardwearing. I had to sell my Rambo rugs as he grew too big in the shoulders and neck.

Thank you so much everyone, now off to do a whole load of following up all those recommendations, from some initial searches it looks like it’ll be a big case of finding one in stock in her size and taking whichever of those recommended that I can actually get my hands on!

Another recommendation for big horse shop, I've only found them recently and they are a great fit on heavy set horses.

Otherwise rambo. I'd generally rather buy a used rambo from ebay than a new one of a cheaper brand.
