My mare still isn’t right so she’s currently been living out 24/7. Dr green is keeping her sane. I’m so glad we are at a point she can be turned out as she’s so chilled and it’s much nicer seeing her pottering about as opposed to being stuck in a stable.

That being said I do need to look at buying a turnout rug for her as she can’t stay naked forever (she doesn’t grow a thick winter coat)

I was looking at rain sheets but in the rain we have had over the past couple of days I feel like they wouldn’t do much use. I don’t want anything too heavy on her.

she’s very petite but has massive shoulders so everything slips back. Has anyone found any brands that work well for big shoulders and don’t slip?

I don’t actually own a TO rug for her as she’s previously only been out in the spring summer and been nakey.

I'd go for a 50g over a rainsheet and some brands have liners so you could slot in a 50g or 100g one of those if she needs anything warmer.

Swish are ok for bigger shoulders with the Big Horse company if you've got a real tank

A good rain sheet is waterproof. I have two Rhino’s and they are totally waterproof, even though one is now on its 5th year and I have washed it ?
They are expensive. I’m looking for another light weight now and think I’ll go for Swish. Chatting to a friend last night we both rate them and they are far more economical than Horseware and higher denier than PE.

Personally feel like denier makes a different for waterproofing but don’t know ??‍♀️ As I had a shires rug that would leak in heavy rain but only bought higher deniers since and have had 0 problems

I've gone for the weatherbeta system this year with changeable liners...I can use them with different weights that way and also pop the liner under stable rugs. I figure it might save me a few pennies from buying different weights of rugs.

After years of thinking they were far too expensive, last year I bought the Rambo Optimo and it fits my chunky person like a dream. I have bought a few liners, which saves space in the tack room and am hoping it will last several years - my last Rambo did over a decade!

I had this https://www.lansdowncountry.co.uk/collections/turnout-rugs for my boy, he had a smallish neck but massive shoulders, the shoulder shaping on these is brilliant, but I had it made with a custom, smaller neck (from the next rug size down), I think they still do this. Lightweight and very waterproof, I had one with a removable liner, and had lined and unlined neck covers to cope with different temperatures. Never needed anything else.

Rambo all the way if you can! I spent silly money on two Rambo’s recently. A duo, so 100g with liners new (sale!) and a second hand nearly new 50g which is mint. They will probably outdo my 10 yr old horse.
