Turnout rugs indoors

i do at the moment to save on livery costs of rug changes for turnout. Seemed weird at first but must admit i have had no problems etc and horse is just as warm and comfortable as usual.

I used to put a stable rug on my mare when I brought her in at night but now, most of the time I leave her in her turnout. I felt sorry for her taking a lovely toastie warm rug off to put on a freezing cold stable rug, I know I wouldn't like it.

Its easy! Better for them and easier for us! The rugs are breathable so fine for in or out doors and I would much rather let a wet rug dry on, than put a wet rug on in the cold mornings and turn them out of a warm stable into a wet field! lol.

Most quality turnout rugs are breathable and designed for indoor as well as outdoor use.
I found it weird at first but as PMP said, the horses are warm and comfy, and it saves so much time in the morning when you can just drag them out without having to fuff about with rugs.
(not so nice when they come in soaking wet...!)

I've been doing this for a couple of years and i'm heading into my third winter doing turnout rugs.
I personally don't like taking off a nice warm rug to put on a cold one just because the horse has come in to be stabled for the night. However it is important to check the rugs and do adjustments daily. Also if the outside the rug is wet it dries so much quicker whilst on the horse, as long as the horse is dry and warm i'm not worried about the outer part of the rug being wet.
Rugs these days are differently designed to the days of using a NZ turnout and Jute rugs. There was an obvious need back then to change the rugs over but not so much these days. We have so much on offer now rug wise, materials are better, the rugs are breathable and generally better made.
I'm happy to use turnout rugs 24/7, it also saves on the expense of buying stable rugs. ;)

i am the same and have loads of rugs to choose from, however, as it costs so much to get them all cleaned each year i have decided to use turnout rugs in the stable to save money. also if they come in from the field with the outside of the rug wet, we have nowhere heated to dry them so they would be dripping wet in the morning and i hate putting a wet cold rug on before i turn out. i am currently using a med weight amigo (mine is clipped) and if it gets very cold at night i will put a lightweight stable rug underneath in the stable but take it off in the morning as she can move around in the field to keep warm. i think its ok to use the modern turnout rugs indoors as they are breathable so the horse should be comfortable... have i convinced you?????

OK. I'm convinced

Best thing I ever did! Imagine getting out of warm toasty bed in the morning and putting on damp cold clothes?!! Why do that to your horse! Saves soooo much time too!!

Stable rugs to me are a thing off the past, I don't see why anybody would want to take off a warm rug and re place it with a damp cold one. All mine have Rambos so very dry and warm all the time :)

Mine lived in TO rug last winter. I found that he didn't sweat up after he was ridden with it as well. Had to pick bits of cardboard off in the morning if wet the night before :D

I use my old turn outs that aren't very waterproof, as stable rugs. My boy has a good selection of rugs though so he'd never go out with a wet one on.

another thumbs up for using turn-outs all the time.

(i know some-one who always changes wet rugs and they stink, you can smell the mouldy wet horse smell in the lane.mine are left on and the horses body heat dries them and no smells)

We just leave turnouts on. So much easier, warmer, and as they are windproof they do keep them warmer too. Makes the mornings much quicker and as people have said, it would be horrid to be put in a cold rug first thing. Bbbbrrr. :)

I take them off every night when they come in and check them over / give them a groom. I also fold the neck part down if its mild so they don't get too hot at night.

At the moment mine are in fleeces at night, and naked in the day - as soon as its cold enough I'll stick their t/o's on full time.

I haven't really used a stable rug in 6 years. Don't see why you would take a warm rug off to put a cold one on. I sometimes use my stable rugs if I've ridden before putting to bed and I'm riding in the morning as think it's nice for them to have a different rug on some nights. Saves so much time aswell though

Another who has not changed rugs for at least 5 years. They live in their T/O's all winter. Never does them any harm and saves me probably about an hour a day changing them!

My mare has her turnouts on at night during the week to save on paying for rug changes and has her stable rug on at the weekend when we go up to turn her out :) Saves time changing them and she stays warm too :)

Going against the grain here, personally I prefer stable rugs on in the stable. Mare we used to own used to have her wet turnout left on her by her previous owner in the stable. When wet it weighed a ton! Helps that I wash my own stable rugs anyway I guess.

My horse won't be wearing the rug outside. He refuses to go out in a rug.

I was planning to use it as a stable rug that I can walk him inhand in the rain without it getting soaked.

my horse is on part livery and shes also a nipper with rugs....hence why id rather do it myself and get bitten/tell her off than my YO - + saves them time in a morning :)
