Last year I bought my Welsh D a lovely Landa Medium Combo turnout rug, loved the rug but he was turned out in the field with barbed wire fencing whilst on loan over winter and has shredded the rug beyond repair :(

I'm looking to buy a decent rug, probably a heavyweight this year as he will be having a hunter clip, i'd like a neck cover too. Don't mind spending the money but it must be durable!! He is very nosey and greedy so will lean over fences/through hedges for the greener grass on the other side!! He doesn't need the rug now but I was hoping to get a discounted one in the sales!!

Thanks in advance for you're help!

Sorry no help here but i will be interested in answers as i need one also for my 14.1 halfinger mare who does the same thing.

TBH, even the highest denier rug will not stand up to barbed wire. I would run a strand of electric tape along the fence to keep the horses away from the wire, this will also lessen the likelyhood of your horse getting some very nasty cuts from the wire.

As far as tough rugs go, you need a high denier. So a 600d rug will not be as tough as a 1200d rug. The Shires Stormcheeta combo is 2000d, with 400g filling, so tough and very warm. ;) I find that Shires rugs are a good fit on chunky types. :)
