Turnout rugs without leg straps

Rug shopping for Hermosa. She's currently borrowing a friend's rug. I was hoping Foinavon's would fit her, but nope.

The YO has said that if we want her to take rugs on and off our horses, we can't have leg straps. I'm fine with that as I prefer fillet straps anyway. Never liked leg straps. I've always made a fillet strap with whatever bit of tat I have, and they get pretty gross. Some brands, like Premier Equine, make rugs without leg straps and have a plasticy thing under the tail. Ingenious, but PE costs an arm and a leg. Are any other companies using a similar design?
  1. I take one leg strap off and use it as a fillet string, I also hate leg straps as so fiddley, undo the leg strap look over one of the rigns where clip goes and put the clip on the opposite side. If they are stitched on just cut them and use either a leg strap or one of these

Just use one of the legs straps as a Fillet string! That’s what I do. Never keep leg straps on any rug, don’t like them
Depends how far down the tag bits are that the leg straps attach too. In my case they are too low down and my horses tail just blows over the top and the rug blows halfway up his back. Can't get near his back legs just now so leg straps are a total no go. I value my life.

Sorry, when the wind blows his tail is typical arab and very fine so it doesn't have any weight to it and his tail just blows under the fillet string not over 🙊

Length of decent, clean hosepipe, about the length you’d want round her bottom; two trigger clips; length of cord / string:
Cord through the hose, through end of one clip, back through hosepipe, attach other clip, and tie off. You can keep the fillet string clean with baby wipes each day, and unclip one end to take rug off /put on more comfortably.
I loop the cord and clip first, needle and very long thread to drop through the hose and draw both ends of the cord through more easily, add the second clip and secure.
Re leg straps, very much depends how exposed your environment is. I once witnessed a 13.2 pony’s rug balloon up over his back like a sail, and bodily smash him into the wall during a ‘named storm’ - chipped shoulder bone, soft tissue damage, very lame. Vet told owners to always use leg straps in gales, or take the rugs off entirely.
The other thing with fillet strings is that a determined horse can wriggle out of the whole rug backwards, leaving it done up nicely in a pile, whereas that party piece is far more difficult in leg straps.
properly fitted leg straps tend to keep turnouts more centred, but not everyone has much idea how to fit them, and they will always take fractionally more time to do - particularly for someone who never undoes their fillet strings at all

You certainly can, and of differing lengths in packs of 3. Ted's bottom needs extra long as does Alice but no one tell her please, or she will have a frump.
Ive got an Alice like that 🤣 Also Swish sell just the fillet strings with plastic tube. I always take the leg straps off and use these.
