My lightweight isnt waterproof anymore so I got it reproofed only to put it back on and after 10 minutes the horse was soaked. So, stupid question but is it because of bad reproofing or bad rug?

Thanks in advance.

its probably so badly worn that even the re-proofer stuff doesnt work enough
it probably works a little but coats do it too my old one did :(
maybe its time for a new rug

Most lightweight t/os seem to be 600 dernier so unlikely to be waterproof in heavy rain.

I think that if a rug leaks it is usually better to leave the horse unrugged as that way he has a better chance of drying off when the rain stops.

It is a one year old Mark Todd which is why I wondered if it was just the reproofing that had gone wrong as it hasnt even had that hard use :( have to admit to being a bit disapointed that it is already worn out... had been going to get another for the new boy think I might get something else now.

I would have expected Mark Todd rugs to last longer.

Was it washed in a biological powder do you know? This seems to strip the water proofing out of them.

It was washed with my other turnouts and they are all fine so it shouldn't be the washing powder. Had been wondering about weatherbeeta rugs so I might see what I can find.

Best rainsheet I have is a 1200d Elle Hoof half neck sheet ... It was £30 and I expected it to last me a season on a 24/7 outside horse ... Still going strong 3 years later, never been reproofed!

did you say you use washing powder??

i think this would definately take the waterproofing off!, if you use rug wash with re-proofer in it, ive always found this leaves them clean but totally waterproof

I have to admit to buying Robinson's own Requisite rugs :) and mine have been washed and reproofed twice over the last 5 years. They still keep my mare dry after her being out 24/7 !!

I`ve got a shires tempest which is great in down pours... just had an Amigo lightweight which i have to say is bloody amazing loads are on sale now for about £33

I'd second the vote for shires - mine have been washed and reproofed twice and still keep the water out.

You really need to put the reproofer in the washing machine with them and then tumble dry for it to fully work. I found this out to my cost with my first attempt at reproofing which failed miserably!!

If its only a one-year-old rug, thats awful, you ought to take it back.
Mark Todd stuff isnt cheap either.
I have had a Derby House, home brand rug for a few years now, it was very cheap and i bought it thinking it would last for around one winter season. But it is still going in perfect condition. So i think the problem must have been the rug in the first place.

If you are going to buy a new one, i really do reccomend Derby House rugs, the one i bought is so comfy and snuggly, that im jealous of my pony!!!

Justto put the cat amongst the pigeons. I love my Fal lightweight turn outs that I have.

They are expensive but I have been really impresed by the fit, they are breathable, they look good after a quick hose down, they are water proof. I just love them. I only have 2 though but if money were no object I would replace all my turn outs with Fal.

Cheaper and also good have been the Masta's. I don't go much on Horseware as I have found them to rub (may just be the shape of my guys though).

Lucky you to have an excuse to go horsey shopping. I would take the rug back though or at least ring Mark Todd about them (the company not the man!). After just a year thats not good at all.

Mt pony has had her Horseware lightweight T\O for 5 years inlcuding 3 years of living out 24/7 and its still going strong she never comes in wet including torrential downpours
