I've just bought a pony for my daughter and need some advise on rugs. She is 13.3hh is kept in at night and is clipped. What turnour rugs would people recommend and does she need a neck please ?

Thanks

I've reached a point in my life where I will only ever buy Rambo! But my horse doesn't trash rugs. If she did, I would go for a cheaper option.

Cheaper alternatives that are still good are Amigo, Premier Equine and Mark Todd.

Personally I hate liners and would rather have a lightweight, mediumweight and heavyweight turnout in my horse's wardrobe. You don't necessarily need stable rugs as well. A lot of people use turnouts in the stable.

I prefer to use rugs with necks over the winter months, especially if the horse is clipped.

What clip does she have?

If a full clip, I would have a necked medium on her at night. And probably a lightweight/medium necked through the day. All Horses and Ponies are different though. For example, 2 full clipped Horses on my yard. One is toasty warm with a fleece and medium necked stable. The other who has this combo is still cold and needs another.

I would start with a medium though and see how she goes.

I also like Rambos but I mainly use Duos so I can just wash the liners. I avoid using neck covers as they rub manes out but if the pony's neck is clipped right out with a short mane perhaps put one on when its particularly cold or horrible.

I share a horse & the owner has asked me to put fleece under l/w turnout 'as it's December' but fleece is slightly larger than turnout & hangs down below rug so will get wet when it's raining. Would you put it on? Horse not clipped.

You would be wise not to put fleeces under turnouts for the reason you say but also they can slide back and cut into the chest/shoulder/withers. Your better to buy a Rambo Duo liner, they can be used under any rug be it stable or turnout -I do, and never have a problem. They come in varying grams of warmth, I have just bought a 400g one for my mare. You can wash them at home too when they become greasy, they dont attract hairs either like fleeces do. Rambo rugs are in my opinion very good quality, so are Shires rugs, Amigo and Weatherbeeta.
