I have a 14.2hh pony in rugs sizes 5,9 hes growing a bit so inbetween 5,9 and 6f currently all his rugs are 5,9 but getting a bit tight and 6ft is too big on him im looking for some advice if anyone has this problem and on what to get him for winter he currently has a tempest sheet hes wearing currently and a lightweight just touching medium derby house full neck that we have had to double rug in the winter. hes a chunky connie but very bum high and growing as hes only 7 so possibly has growing in him but im looking at getting him a rug between medium/heavyweight for winter he lives out 24/7 with field shelter but sometimes comes in the stable in the worse weather. we had a problem last year where we ended up double rugging him as it was freezing and he got quite sore rubs so looking at getting him something that ideally we dont need to add a liner too but also he wont overheat in he will have a blanket clip but as he has quite sensitive skin we like to keep him warm and not clip him fully as he gets sore. any help and advice appreciated!

he has quite a small front area chest head etc but at the back he is very bum high and as hes not in alot of work hes quite chunky he used to be quite slim last winter when in work 5 days a week twice a day so im not sure if its because of him only being in 3 days a week work now or purely because he is growing

that could be a possibility but ideally we dont want to use liners or chest rugs purely becuase he would feel quite restricted being a spooky young pony hes not the best with rugs so just want something thats not to tight or big but is like a duvet pretty much he does have quite sensitive skin and dont want alot rubbing him as that has happened previously just want some recomendations on something thats not so tight or big but also keeps him warm and cosy and is easy to put on and off for how hes changing aswell

Have you tried swish ? They are very good and satin bits and sheepskin to stop rubbing. If he’s a Connie you shouldn’t need to double rug him , last winter mine only wore 200G on about 4 days, lived out with 100gram and he’s clipped, the hay keeps them warm.

no thanks for the suggestion i will look in to it he is quite a mix were not sure his breed fully as theres nothing in his passport but hes got quite sensitive skin and is a bit appolossa in him reason we double rugged is because he was out 24/7 fully clipped from coming back from college and we only have 2 turnout rugs since having him because hes mainly been stabled in colder weather so we had to put his medium stable rug underneath and when it was a bit warmer his fleece

Does he actually need rugging? He's a chunky native...

I was wondering that, although if he's ridden I assume they'll want a clean dry patch to put the saddle on! If he gets rubs though, could you try not clipping? That would mean he had plenty of fluff on his chest to protect him a bit?

Try MudRugs, very generous sizing and a detachable belly flap but not heavy to lift. The chest overlaps at the front so is very adjustable and won't rub as the shoulder pleats are huge. I wonder if your Tempest rug is rubbing as these dont have shoulder pleats? Personally I never use anything with not shoulder pleats as my cob is huge in the shoulder and neck and it would be like a straitjacket!

Maxima Equestrian are really good for inbetween sizes as they have fully adjustable front fastenings you have scope to alter it to the correct fit. Reasonably priced too with free delivery.

Thank you all for the suggestions the rugs that are rubbing him is mainly when I put his fleece underneath his turnout just to keep him a bit warmer his tempest is like a thin rain sheet and is a bit bigger then his other rugs which is what were looking for but something that's a bit heavier but won't be tight I'll try and attach a photo of him he does vary and recently since coming back hes got very bum high and chunky think it's because he's filling out I got him as a just turned 6 year old and he's changed alot since then

Reason we clip is because he can get quite sweaty and was in 5 days a week twice a day work last year at college he's not clipped currently as we're trying to work out a clip that will keep him cool but not clipping his belly as his girth rubs him due to his sensitive skin we had a girth cover last year but he didn't like it

I used a rug extender when i first got my horse as he was thinner and I only had 6’3 as he has muscled up he has now gone into 6’6 or even 6’9 so I have now bought bigger rugs. I use a bib under rug and sew elastic on the front which attach to the outer rug front fasteners and it stops the vest running back and becoming tight and rubbing

He lives out on a 1 acre grass field has adlib hay when in the stable he can lose weight in winter so we give him some speedy mash but since coming back from college he's definitely filled out and grown like a tank not sure what breed he is but hes quite spotty nose and when you bath him his whole body is spotty but he's got a white coat not sure of his breeding he's a bit of a mystery

You are making this overly complicated. Either get a no fill, 100gm and 200gm rug, or get a decent no fill and 100gm and 200gm liners. They wont rub. Stable rugs and fleeces tend to pull back under turnouts as they arent designed for that sort of use, and then they can rub.

If hes between sizes then a 6ft no fill turnout and 5ft9 liners would be the best fit.

As i have already stated I have 2 turnout rugs already I was just looking on reccomendations for people who have experinced this type of thing with there horses growing and fillng out and if they knew of any brands that suited this for there change in shapes ive added photos for referance if people can relate and described his overall self to put towards this I appreciate your advice but i was purely looking for reccomendations of brands if you read above you would see i do not want to use any liners or chest rugs. so was asking for purely one rug that would be good, ive stated information about him as some people are saying you shouldnt need to rug him. I know the cause of his rubbing and that is why im looking for alternative things but i only want to buy one rug.

You could always get a 6 and get a few darts put in it (most rug washing places do it for a few pounds) they can be easily removed too without needing anyone else to do it.

I would never put a fleece under a turnout, bound to slip back, clamp on the withers, and rub. Also static will be a problem. Far better to use a liner or think well fitting quilted rug or alternatively I have found 50g or 100g rugs very useful. I have the PE 40g, a 50g MudRug and Weatherbeeta Med/Lite 100g

Ruggles rugs have very adjustable front fastenings. They're 1200 denier - I think - and have an elasticated neck which helps to keep the rain off.
