My horses live out 24.7 and my eldest mare gets mud fever - not really bad but she still gets it - unavoidable really!

im considering using turnout socks... are they any good? they will be on 24.7 and only coming off for a air once/twice a week when shes on the yard

Good/bad idea?

Or do i leave her without ?

Never used them so just very unsure?

Thanks

I would say very bad idea! Leaving boots on a horse 24/7 is not advisable, imagine if the horse got a rub and you didn't notice even for a day! That is a worse discomfort than some mud fever scab. plus the hot, moist environment inside boots (even breathable ones) is not great long term for legs...
I used keratex waterproofing powder on my cob and it was fab.
Also try and minimise mud, feed in different areas, hardcore in the gateway etc.
Lastly I would consider if your routine is suitable for your horse, a horse prone to mud fever should perhaps not be living in a muddy field 24/7

I used the equi chaps but like Inchy said you can't really leave them on for such lengths of time. It will do more harm than good. Have you tried supplements?

Thanks guys - i wasnt sure!

Shes not that bad - shes manageable - i was jsut trying to completely stop it i guess!!

She had a few scabs last year - i just sudocremmed them (never wash her legs) and it went quickily -

ets - the field is NOT that muddy - at all!!.... she got it last year and we were in a diff place...she will get mud fever regardless...!

any tips welcome though! :)

Equilibrium do a fantastic pair.. They are £50 but worth every penny! They are fine to use for 12 hours max, but not 24/7.. Legs need to breathe!!

Thanks ^ thought so :)

wont be investing in any then :) rather let them breathe and treat mild mud fever than have a miserable cow bag of a horse with nasty legs :D :D

thanks ^

i used to use some cheap gold label stuff and it was fab - but bear in mind i wont be brushing them off daily in winter - they always get a full hands on checkup/rugs off and back on when its not raining etc but i wont be brushing nor hosing legs daily....
