Sorry just following on from previous posts about turnout. am interested to see what everyone has .. I have no turnout at all at the mo, my horse in full time but lives out in autumn and summer.
We have the option to turn out all year round. My horse comes in 3/4 nights per week and stsya out the rest. Will be out more in sping and summer though.
It varies, mine are in at night at the moment to preserve the grazing, not my choice and they don't much like it either. As soon as the ground firms up at least two of them will go out 24/7 (the one who is competing is looking quite sleek, so I might keep her grazing restricted)
There are 22 here who live out 24/7 and 3 who live in the stables overnight. The stabled horses are turned out at 8.30am at the moment and brought in at 4.30pm. So plenty of turnout for whomever wants it.
My filly only goes out 2 hours per day but the yard she is on has all year round, day TO, she ust does not like being out, odd i know, after an hour or so she paces the gate area shouting and if you think if i leave her she will go and mingle or graze she runs through electric fencing and it eventually ends up in a heap. Though i would prefer her to be out more.
I keep mine at home and they are in at night anyway, so i can pick and choose when they stop in and go out. They have been in the last couple of days though as the snow and frost has just added to our waterlogging problem. If we have much more rainfall i will be limiting the boys turnout a lot more and letting the babies have full use of all of the winter paddocks. Its just horrendous at the moment ive not known a mild wet winter like it!!
Just think in a few months the ground will be rock hard and cracked and we will be going through a drought!! LOL!!
my horses are stabled from 7am to 5pm and out at night because my gelding jumps the 4'3" post and rails as the grass is always greener on the other side - he can't jump out in the dark
Georgie is normally out by day this time of year but the ground is so waterlogged and now frozen solid into horrid ruts that he is only going out for a couple of hours 2 or 3 times a week.
3 are out during the day throught any weather and are in at night, 1 is out during the day providing it isnt super windy as it winds him up, any other weather he has to suffer through! and is in at night
4 out 24/7, 1 stabled at night and out during the day for about 5 hours, depending on the weather. He's an ancient boy of 29 who really DOES love his stable, coming in is the only time he shows any animation at all, he ALMOST pulls but has such beautiful manners he wouldn't actually dream of it.
My horse comes in at night in the winter and out from 6 am - 7pm every day. I keep him in a rented field near my home, so I can do as I please. This summer I am going to turn him out 24/7 and see how he gets on, but it depends on his weight really as I don't want him getting fat.
All 6 live out 24/7. We don't have much grass left so they have round bales of hay and dinner every night. It is very muddy and we do have stables but it's not practical to keep them in because we can't get down to turn out in the morning and the field is miles from the stables so the turnout people won't do it. They are happier out anyway, they tow you back to the field in the evenings.
My horse goes out in the day in at night so has around 8-9 hours in the field. He likes to be out but he does love his field. Our field isnt actually bad at the moment all our field are on a hill so only the bottom field is really affected mud wise at the moment
It's not got really cold here yet, so Lady and Fudge are still out at night, but in rugs, they have a huge well drained field with lots of natural shelter and come in during the day to have hay, be feed, groomed and ridden. If it gets cold they will come in at night and be turned out during the day.
not really got any winter turnout due to land issues.
usually keep them as as much as poss.most places ive been to have been in at night in winter or out 24/7.
my little old mare lives in night in winter and in during the day in the summer if its hot.
