Has anyone ever had a lesson on a dressage schoolmaster at Turville Valley Stud or have any other opinions on the place? Am thinking about having some schoolmaster lessons there.

Never had lessons on a schoolmaster there, but many moons ago when they were a riding school it's where I learnt to ride. It's a family run business and all the staff were always really friendly and brill. Still mostly the same people there as I've seen them at demo's. I'd say yes, if I was interested in dressage it's where I'd be going for lessons.

They have, amongst others, some wonderful Iberian Schoolmasters there and have decades of experience.

Samantha Thurman-Baker is the daughter of one of the owners and gets regular mentions as a winner on the dressage pages of H&H; evidence that they know their stuff.

I learned to ride there too in the mid 70's. Loved every minute of my lessons and week camps.Think my info is a tad out of date.(only by about 35 years tho!)

I was brought up 2 miles up the road from the stud and when it was a riding school for all ages (inc back then childrens ponies it was THE place to have lessons) it still is very popular. They have gorgeous stallions and both the sisters that run it are fab classical riders,i used to work for 2 of their ex students, they were jaw dropping to watch ride and they were their under dogs! I would def have lessons there if i could afford it,having 3-4 horses myself just isn't possible really. I am biased though as have always admired the stud everytime i rode past on my 'average' pony!

Yes, I have had lessons there, although probably not for about 5 or 6 years.

I highly recommend it. It was not cheap, but you get what you pay for - good quality instruction on good quality, highly trained horses.

TVS always did used to have a weight limit however (I'm not aware of exactly what, just that I was well below whatever it was). Also, as far as I remember, the initial lesson is a 1/2 hour lunge lesson - a kind of assessment - because they are fussy (and rightly so!) as to who gets to ride their horses.

After that, then come the lunge lessons. It could take very many lessons before you're allowed off the lunge! But that's no bad thing in my opinion - I mean, the Spanish Riding School of Vienna do the same!

If only I hadn't had to cut back on so many little "extras" financially over the last few years, then I'd be back there for more lessons like a shot!

So once, again - TVS = very highly recommended.

Apologies but I'm hijacking the post a little, as I'd not heard of TVS until i read this but it's not far from me and sounds great!

Any idea how much lessons are approx.? The website doesn't say but I'd love to have the odd schoolmaster lesson to supplement lessons on my new Iberian!

Hi

I went last week after everyone's recommendations on here and loved it and going again this weekend, so can recommend it. A 45min private lesson on a schoolmaster was £48, but they also do shorter lessons and semi-private lessons too I think. I rode a gorgeous Lusitano caled Sammy and had great fun and learnt loads too. Definitely recommend it. PM me if you need any more information.
