Frank keeps getting a slightly tight butt muscle (left side) and pelvis following cantering on hacks. He had it a few months ago and had chiro out and has been doing slow work since but after a wee speedy canter on monday he seems a wee bit tight again. It's only noticable as he stands a wee bit wonky in the stable occassionally.
He's a 13.3hh chunky cob.
He's not very fit so that won't help but does anyone have any other suggestions why this might be?

Does the saddle fit? Is the rider straight and balanced? Foot balance? Doing faster or more demanding work when the horse isnt fit enough isnt adviseable as it may cause a problem, exaggerate an existing problem or aggravate a previous problem. Make sure he is fit enough for what you want him to do or you will never sort it out.

thank you teddyt :)

I think it's a combination of my lack of straightness (I'm very tight in the back/neck at the mo too and seeing a chiro) plus his lack of fitness. I'll get his saddle checked too.

A crooked rider is more than enough to cause a problem as the horse will have to compensate- think of carrying someone piggyback who is hanging to one side. Maybe stick to slower paces until everything is checked?

yup you're right, I was planning on just sticking to walk and a bit of trot but he was desparate for a wee blast. Bad me.

His chiro has been out twice and sorted him but has said that I need to get sorted asap or the problem will re-occur , as it has. She's due out in June to see him. I'm at the chiro on thursday to have a treatment plan outlines so will just stick to walk until things are sorted.
