Well I though I was going to be clever and post earlier. Wrote out report on laptop on the way home with the mobile broadband (mum’s birthday present – not that I had ulterior motive!
wink.gif
) and just I pressed post the battery went on the PC. So I hope the report is as good the second time!

Tweseldown was our first foray into the world of OI. Boy did we choose a good one to start most of my section were Olympic or 4* horses, I followed Mark Todd XC (who incidentally was eliminated for missing a fence

).

Dressage was much improved the new tests suit us better with less canter and things we can’t do replaced with some we can. Generally she tried hard and although flunked our free walk we had a score of 38 which wasn’t totally out of it
smile.gif
. WFP had 25 and next best was Lucy W on Shaabrak on 30.

Show Jumping was big and square and by the time I jumped the going had got sticky adding a good 3 inches to the jumps. I got to the start to find there were 22 still in front of me! By the time I went only 1 of those had gone clear. Bless her she jumped out of her socks and didn’t touch a pole despite the riders numpty moment of totally missing at the first fence

!

I was gobsmacked at this point to find myself with a very competitive score of 38 and the leader on 48! Far better than I imagined in that company

.

Cross country was big with a few quite technical combinations. The first few were just big and wide and she ate these up bounded over the drop down the hill and left handed to the triple brush. Bit fast but stayed straight over the drop palisade to a related distance angled pheasant feeder we were a bit far off but picked up. A few nice straightforward ones and then to the first question rail, sunken road angled out to skinny wide roll top.

Managed this quite well very honest as bit wobbly but picked up. Then onto a big double of brush corners which to be honest she usually eats up. Came to the first and just couldn’t lock her on which is unusual and slipped out the side, represented and did exactly the same! Just didn’t seem to understand the question. You could jump it from the other side so did that and then circled and jumped the second as numbered separately.

Flew over the Trakanner and then onto the fence I was probably most worried about a coffin but out on 3 strides was an angled big narrow hedge thing. She jumped green at the ditch so pulled sharp left and then right without crossing tracks and jumped the skinny well.

Finished with the water and a double of skinnies feeling confident and jumping well.

Pulled up at the end to be met by BE steward. ‘How many stops did you have’ ‘2’ I reply he tells me 3 and I should of pulled up. Find out they gave me another stop for my manoeuvring at the coffin! He was quite happy that I hadn’t intentionally carried on and went off to query with jump judge. I see only got 60 so he must have decided I was ok although it didn’t really worry me.

So bit disappointed and beating myself up a bit over what I did wrong
crazy.gif
, did I get my line wrong, did I just not set her up right, have to admit always a believer it is my fault not the horses. At the end of the day there was a lot of positive and I don’t think I have a long term problem she didn’t understand the question today. Off to my trainer at the weekend to build simulated corners. Course did cause a lot of problems so not too bad but only the second time Sarnie has ever had XC faults.

Many thanks to Saf who acted as a brillant groom for the day and I think can add some SJing pictures tomorrow. Also videos of dressage and showjumping tomorrow, still uploading at present and think I had better go to bed as up at 5 for work tomorrow!

Fab report
smile.gif

Shame about the blip but in general it sounds like she has come out raring to go this year. Especially well done for sj clear in what sound like horrid conditions.

Looking forward to vids

Soudns like a fab day - the SJ looked as though it caused loads of problems.

From w hat it sounds, she didn't lock on and understand the question I wouldn't panic about it being your fault as such, just a misunderstanding and winter blues?

What a great dressage and show-jumping! Sounds like the corners came out of the blue, and we know she's normally a sure thing xc so I think you'll be getting lots of points this year. Well done! How many hours driving home was it?!

Great report SJ and really well done
grin.gif
dont beat yourself up about the XC (i know we all do it though
tongue.gif
) She sounds like she was amazing especially SJing and most of the XC
smile.gif
just put it down to you both being a tad rusty at the beginning of the season
smile.gif
Dressage has improved massively so big pat on the back for you and polos for Sarnie
grin.gif

Well done for the dressage and brilliant sj. I think the xc looks really tough for a first outing and, looking at the results, you certainly werent the only one to have problems.

Billy Landretti blotted his perfect record!!

I remember them having those corners in the 2* a couple of years ago, I remember them causing quite alot of problems then, even to very experienced combinations. I guess sometimes horses just don't quite understand what we are asking of them.

Well done. How annoying to have run outs, especially on a good XC horse. If you are anything like me you kind of feel a little bit guilty of blotting their good record. But really it was probably just early season lack of match practise.

I hope that BE steward was nice to you..... he is my Dad
grin.gif

Btw there are some nice pics of you in the picture gallery by RachelFerd she hasn't posted them but click on the link and there are three of you.

That's such a shame S_J, she is such a clever horse and up to that point you made it sound easy. Am gutted for you but at least you are both home safe and sound, so well done anyway.
smile.gif

Ets, just went to look at the pictures and WOW, there was no way she was going to touch that fence with her legs tucked up so neatly, clever girl
grin.gif

Fantastic report S_J, I love your reports with all the course photos etc, really helps us understand what you are talking about
smile.gif
Well done on D and SJ (esp latter) and, as others have said, she's such a sure bet XC as a rule I'm sure it was just one of those things, so looking good for the season ahead
smile.gif

smile.gif

I think that was a fab result the xc was obvs just a blip which I'm sure you have already started working on ironing out
smile.gif

Your section read like a who's who of the eventing world!!
smile.gif

i confess to being most surprised when i saw the incident cos last time i saw sarnie and sarah they weremotoring round Pau, but as i said, dont worry about it, it was probably just a bit of a moment for what ever reason. Maybe she is coming into season or something totally random, i am sure she will be fine nexttime out.

Don't beat yourself up about it, sometimes they just don't get their eye in or understand the fence even if they've done something similar before. Take comfort from the fact that you were well up there after the dressage and showjumping and will be back on form with the xc next time out. Every horse should be allowed a blip now and again, they're not machines.
wink.gif

Fab photos on RachelFerd's flickr album by the way, go and have a look and be smug about how fab you look together.

Well done with the dressage and showjumping- better than the pro's! Shame XC but sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise and makes you sharper.
Connie did the same at Chatworth last year at angled brushes, just dropped out at them, so out of character-she didn't have a single fault after that as it woke her and I up a bit and we practiced which really was very useful- at 3* there are so many corners and angled brushes it doesn't do any harm to go back and fine tune. Much better to make an occasinal error at an ODE, as its the 3DEs that matter now. See you at Gatcombe!!

Great report S-J, Sarnie is a star
grin.gif
you must be chuffed to be up there with the best of them after the dressage and SJ, you know her XC is normally spot on! Good luck for your next event
grin.gif

well done for the SJ - that track was causing endless problems - only clear I saw was Miners Frolic - so you were in good company
grin.gif

although it's no consolation, I saw lots of horses struggle with the brush corners, I thought it was a fairly chunky intermediate overall really. Got a few pictures on XC, although the rain was getting in my way a bit -

He certainly was, very fair, listened and didn't take a hard line, far better than a previous experience years ago!

Well done!

ooo.gif
at the 5 hour drive - did you manage to stay awake at work today!
tongue.gif

The dressage and SJ sound fab. I was having a look at the results and looks like the SJing caused some carnage.

She looks great in the XC pics, sure it was just a first day back at school blip.

Gave work as much attention as usual anyway

Better luck next time, I'm sure it was only first outing 'green-ness', dressage and esp SJ sound fantastic, and RF's pics show she was def enjoying herself.

When is the lovely Poppy's first outing??
