Two horses need rehoming, any ideas?

I have no other advise to give to add to what the others have said but I did not just want to read and run. Wanted to say what a wonderfull thing you are doing, you are a very caring person, I do hope that you get something sorted, but again well done you for everything that you are doing and trying to do for them.

You also need to call trading standards to ask them to investigate the YO questionable business practices.

What is the name of the charity?

I think all horses HAD an owner, even the Amersham horses had an owner, just not a good one. Your post is ridiculous............ you are implying that only horses on a mass scale are worthy of charitable help.

That's not very friendly :p
But you actually raise a good point. I suppose in truth I think a lot of those horses should be destroyed, simply because we've got a big, fat, growing problem in this country, and if we keep trying to save them all, it's going to get worse. That doesn't mean I don't want to save them. I have, on frequent occasions. And I certainly don't think anything that isn't a giant rescue case, worthy of the media is in any way less important. But if owners took responsibility (not the OP) there would be less Amershams - because, as you correctly point out, those horses all had an owner once. Some were unlucky that their much loved horse end up in such a pit. Others failed to step up and do what is right.

I also have slight concerns about many charities - and have made the decision to fund horses being PTS myself, rather than being sent by their loving owners to local rescue centres that vets actually proclaim as being worse than a death sentence!!

You are coming across as nothing but lovely & caring op. But your yo sounds an uncaring callous barsteward. If he couldn't afford to feed them over winter, then he should have rang rspca himself or pts, not just left them to rot until someone like you came along. I hope his business does go under & he loses his yard & home, & is treated in the same unfeeling manner he's treated those horses till you got there. Scummy ****, as are the previous owners. Ditto amymay, report him to rspca.

Rockysmum, thanks, I've requested to join the group so hopefully will get on there soon :)

I dont know what, if anything, the YO did while they were turned out as I've only been there a week. He may well have been giving them a bit of hay but I honestly dont know.

This horse's care was completely the YO's responsibility as soon as it became apparent the owner was not returning.

Sorry to have appeared unfriendly, your reply is well reasoned and not at all ridiculous :). I am thinking back 40 years and wondering if this situation existed then, but we were just not so aware of it. I really hope the OP finds a solution to these 2 old TBs as I have found they can be rewarding to restore.

I'll be back on tomorrow evening, I need to get to bed as I'm up at half 5 tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your help so far, hopefully I can get these horses sorted :)

Admin on the Facebook page want to know you name then they can add you to the group as they have a lot of people waiting to join

OP really hope you can get them sorted but I would have serious concerns about any person who can leave horses in that condition - they were (and still are) your YO's responsibility if the owner has done a bunk (if in fact that is the case). Your YO has let you take the burden after you have been there a week !!!

Good luck with the transport and charity - just be careful what you are getting yourself into at the yard.

I might regret saying this in the morning - but I could do a part leg, Newmarket to M25 area, if someone would do the East Sussex leg.

But I would want to know what the charity is called and make sure it has sufficient funds and that it is reputable.

Also would need to know both horses loaded fairly easily - any chance of practicing first?

DuckToller - that is fab news regarding the transport. I have been PM'ed the name of the Charity/Sanctuary and will try and find out about them this week.

I know exactly the position you are in OP as I posted a very similar thread about two TBs late last year.

Long story and you can find the threads through my stats page if you want, but they ended up being PTS. It broke my heart, but was the best thing for those particular horses.

I hope and pray that you can save these horses and commend you on your efforts, I did it for a long time and it is physically and emotionally draining. Well done for being so selfless.

if you fear the horses are not strong enough to be turned out with others then maybe it would be wise to get them checked BEFORE they are wormed and also before they travel to make sure they are fit/strong enough for the journey?

I remember your thread GG, heartbreaking. Lets hope for a better outcome for these 2.

Hope you manage to find someone to take them OP. An abandoned horse falls under the yard owner's responsibility, fair or not. Do they have passports etc? Would be great if you could find out anything about their ridden life before, even if the YO remembers anything about them.

Are you saying he runs a racehorse retraining yard? Surely someone who runs a yard has the contacts and resources not to let these poor horses end up like this :-(

Tonitot - I have a colleague who has just messaged me and can vouch for this charity/sanctuary. Do these two TBs have any past/current medical history etc. When did they last have the vet - do you know which vet?

Newbury to the place in East Sussex will be about 120 miles. Are they fit to travel? A vet will able to tell you this.

I hope the above helps.

You are doing a grand job.

Correction: Newmarket to the place in East Sussex is about 115 miles - approx. 2 hours by car - would that be 3 1/2 hrs in a horse box (lorry)? Also - do they actually box?

OP well done and good luck , your YO is bang out of order and is lucky you have not had the RSPCA to him.
I hope you find a home for them but you will need to get their passports and double check the charity is a good one .
I hope it works out well for them .
