I have two loose boxes (14 x 12 and 12 x 12) and one tack room (6 x 12)

The larger loosebox is for one of my ponies who comes in around 30% of the time depending on weather, one houses some chickens in runs and the tack room is bedded down with straw for lambing (though currently unused)

The other pony is happy to be out 24/7 but in bad weather sleeps on the concrete in front of the loosebox containing his buddy

As the weather is so awful I have put both ponies in the largest stable tonight

My husband has just pointed out that I could have left the 'tack room' open for the other pony to shelter in but I would be very worried about him getting cast in an awkwardly shaped space

Now very worried I've made the wrong call. The ponies get on well so I would imagine they would be ok sharing surely? they have a large hay net each, they are both 11hh.

Mine share, one of my mini's goes in with anyone on box rest and keeps them super happy

They will be absolutely fine ... we used to have a field shelter about the same dimension with drawer bars across the front and when it was really cold and windy we would bed it down with straw put in plenty of hay and put our 2 welshies in together. They loved it and we often found them snuggled in a pile on a cold winters morning!!!:D
 
They get on, they're little...I'm sure they'll be fine :-)
I used to keep my old 17hh wb in with his girlfriend. That was in a barn rather than a stable so they had plenty of space, but they were much happier together.
 
They should be fine. Make sure you take the headcollars off, I once put two foals in a stable together and they managed to lock the buckles of their headcollars together and when I went back (luckily for them, very quickly) they were joined at the cheek like siamese twins. Please learn from my mistake.:o:eek:
 
I have three stables and 4 horses. The big corner box is big enough for the two ponies and they are happy to be in together.

If you feel there is enough room then there is no reason why they should not share.
 
We have 2 yearlings in together, they practically sleep on top of each other. A broody who frequently takes a pony in with her and 2 ponies who sometimes bunk up together. As long as neither is nasty and they are friends they will be grand.
 
My 2 exmoors are sharing a stable at the moment and seem ok. Not ideal, but the field is so exposed I'm unhappy leaving them out in this crappy weather, as there's zero shelter in the field. It's the carnage next morning that's the problem! I've just been putting two haynets in there and a larger water bucket.
 
My three minis share a stable all the time and when I leave the big horses in even though they have a stable each they always go into one stable and share a hay net so I am sure your ponies will be fine.:)
 
My grumpy gelding undoes door bolts so we double bolt the door between stables but last week bf only did the top lock up and i was mortified to find my two chunks in one stable... Thankfully all in one piece and munching ollie's bed. They only bicker when the shetland's around, otherwise they're best buds.
 
My highlands share a stable. Granted it's a massive stable, but they seem happy enough. Even my cantankerous old cob has shared with the (then) 2 y/old without any bickering.
 
My 14.2 has a 14x12 box & will happily share with daughters 11.1, only reason I won't leave them together overnight is because being old, I like mine to have the space to walk round & spread out. If I bring both in, I let both go at the barn door & go in their boxes themselves. One occasion I then got sidetracked, but had forgotten to open my mares door before catching them. Both were happily squashed in the ponies 12x10 box eating, not sure how they'd co-ordinated turning back round though.
 
Thank you all, I feel a lot better now. Fab pics :)

If this weather continues I will have to evict the chickens so the ponies can have a stable each!
 
Our 2 13hh ponies happily share a stable! They have access to the coral should they need to escape each other, but they are joined at the hip!! they share everything... even feed from the same bucket... :rolleyes:

I have had two horses in one stable together on numerous occasions whilst our stables were being rebuilt- not planned but we were hit by foul weather! Plenty of hay and lots of straw bedded down. there were two 15.2 s curled up together like gerbils!
 
My two yr olds share a stable on the rare occasion that they come in, both about 12.3hh or just over now. As well as taking headcollars off, please be careful with rugs - a friend of mine had his two ponies in together, I heard a commotion and went round to see what was happening, and it looked like one was kicking the hell out of the other, round and round. What had actually happened was that the kicker had got her leg caught in the other's leg strap and was trying to get out, the other was trying to get away so kept walking but could only go in circles around the stuck one. Not easy to get in safely and calm them enough to release, so I would suggest taking off leg straps and fillet strings and making sure all surcingles are on the cosy side rather than loose.
 
My friend had a listed brick pig sty in her paddock. She was borrowing my ponies and they where in the paddock. They liked to shelter from the sun in there which is not a problem but one was 14hands and the other 11.2 and the doorway was wither height. I never saw them go in but they must have had to back in as it was only about 8'x6'
 
They will be fine, my two 12.2hh youngster often go in one 12 x12 box by choice and share everything. I think when the weather is cold they keep each other warm. My two even lie down together.

Goodness knows what we will wake up to tomorrow, looking like we could have drifting 40cm up here, may well not get out tomorrow, but luckily have enough food in for all the animals.
