I can't cope any longer so cob is going to have to get clipped this week...I swear he starts sweating as soon as my foot is in the stirrup!
I haven't clipped him before, only had him a couple of months, but been told he is a nightmare and hates it. I am not phased by this but what clippers would be best on a clipper hating hairy cob? I'm thinking quiet but strong enough to get through lots of fluff!

Second question. What rug would he be best in afterwards? He doesn't get rugged except if I'm riding and it's raining and then just a rainsheet but with all his fluff gone he'll be somewhat shocked

He is a fat porky so don't want to rug up too much and if he didn't sweat loads he wouldn't be clipped. I'm hoping once he's fitter this will not be so much an issue but he might be manky even then

To be honest if you know he hates being clipped I would get the vet out to sedate him. Get the most heavy duty clippers you can on him, if you have a friend with clippers work on him together and get the job done quickly.

You probably will only need a lightweight turnout and a heavy summer sheet for chilly nights in the stable at the moment.

I've got the most hairy cob, I've owned him for 3 1/2 years & I soon noticed how sweaty he gets.

He was nearly 5 when I bought him & I didn't have any clippers so I got a local lady to clip him a couple of times, which he didn't enjoy much:-) This proved quite expensive so I persuaded my hubby to buy me some clippers & he has never been a problem to clip since then.

I have Heiniger Progress clippers which are very quiet and very light, these are good as I am small.

I clip his legs every 4 weeks & twice a year he has a full clip.

He has a light rug for spring & autumn but only has a full neck medium rug in the winter, he comes in at night when it's cold & I have never known him to be cold.

We clip our hairy cob with Liveryman Arena clippers and they are great. He was clipped about 3 weeks ago and has his summer sheet on in the daytime when he is in.. He thinks he's a racehorse at the moment!

I have a cob that was literally scarred stiff of clippers, so after 3 yaers of twiching and 6 months of running quite clippers in the stable EVERY night when a groom I can finally do a full clip and feathers every couple of weeks with him eating hay and standing very relaxed, even falls asleep sometimes. I have Liveryman Harmonary battery pack and mains clippers and they are fab, very quiet, and the battery is brill for nervous horses as I think sometimes it is the leads etc that scare them as much as the actual clippers. I must admit the Liveryman clippers do struggle to do a full clip as they are not heavy duty but they do the job and Im happy with them. Good luck!
