Could you knowledgable lot please help me with a couple of queries....totally unrelated!

First: what options would one have in terms of transporting 16hh horses if one didnt have a lorry license? If one was buying a vehicle....

And second: when would a Welsh Sect D stallion be mature (roughly)?

Thanks

Q

Without a lorry licence a good trailer and 4x4 is probably best - I think more up to the job than a 3.5 tonne lorry (which I think is the biggest you can drive without a proper licence)

Maturity - at least 6 or 7 y/o - their bones don't stop growing until then so they don't physically mature until then and my assumption is always that they finish physically growing before they can mentally mature fully.

I think It depends how long you have had your licence - if you acquired it before a certain year you can drive 7.5 tonne with a normal licence. I stand to be corrected but that is what I have been told, can anyone clarify?

No, you are right. 'Grandfather rights' I believe. But I dont have them, despite being qualified to drive armoured fighting vehicles! (Army!) and 12year old license!

I may be able to convince someone to put me through a military course, but with cutbacks its hard to justify, so Im weighing up options.

Thank you.

You really need to research very carefully with regards to the weight of the trailer, weight of the 2x 16hhs and the 4x4 to tow allowing for people, tack etc. Many 4x4's on the market would put you over the maximum towing capacity. The same is said for horseboxes.
Having owned many Welsh I would say their mental maturing age is 7-8. Physically about the same. My 4 yo was all bum high when I bought him 18 mths ago. Then he levelled out. Now he seems bum high again. I anticipate going through about 3 or more saddles or variable width changes over the next several years.
