I don't mean puppies the same age or litter mates but finding myself dog less and a pup on the way I am wondering what the best way forward is. I don't like dogs to be on their own indefinitely. The little dog I just lost would have been a very good role model and having trawled the rescue sites and been to local rescues, I am not at all sure I would get so lucky again. And also, a lot depends on the character of the pup we are getting, both parents are very calm, well mannered dogs (well trained!).

So can it be done? If I look to get another pup by the end of the year? Any advice welcome.
 
We often have 2 or 3 but they do not get trained (walked) together until at least a year. What breed did you settle on in the end? :)
 
I meant to message you :) we have a lovely working bred golden retriever coming-a boy.

The training/walking separately would be difficult-or it would as they get a bit older.
 
I wouldn't. A year with one and get another next year. Ideally, which I know is sadly not an option for you, a few year gap so you don't have two dogs ageing at the same time.

I don't know if you FB but Gundog Rescue and Rehoming are based in Ireland but bring dogs over here quite often. They seem good and dogs are fostered and assesed before rehoming.
 
thanks Clodagh, it is my feeling as well. I will look up the Gundog Rescue thanks. Age wouldn't be a deal breaker for the right dog, as long as they can handle a younger one.

Sam is on twitter also. They are a very good rescue, sensible about their rehoming policy and often have lovely dogs in (I had to restrain myself from taking the 9 month old working bred goldie in recently)

I covet a Goldie but can't justify one when I have access to a kennel of someone else's trial standard labs at my disposal for picking up. Hope we get puppy photos! Once the pups get to about 10-12 months I bring them out with older dogs, initially on a lead until they are steady but I need the older dogs to be rock steady and trained to be able to focus on the pup. It can be a struggle time wise but mine go for a swim in morning (lead walk to lake, swim and lead walk home) and then get trained in some manner in the afternoon even if it's a 10-15 min session in the meadow on dummies.

I've got two here at the moment - pup is just a year and the older is just 2yo. They've only started going out together in the last 8 weeks really and only because the 2yo is quite forward and very steady. I also get pups at about 4-6 months usually which makes life a little easier.

yeah, I need to be realistic-and patient! First time I've not had a dog in the house for about 24 years and its horrid-I've no structure to the day with the horses being out and I'm just too bloody sad right now to go for a walk on my own.
 
It's awful isn't it... We had a month between last dog dying and lily coming and I was besides myself. Can't bear to be in the house with no dog.

Was obsessively searching gumtree and emailing breeders every day :(

well I am trawling rescue sites-unfortunately everything I like the look of seems to be a foreign rescue :( But I have put feelers out and contacted the group suggested so fingers crossed.

if you suggest a puppy farming ad on Gumtree, is there anyone to report it to?
 
well, have reported them to the SSPCA for starters. Its not one of the fancy crosses and the pups aren't that expensive but they did advertise pups as ready to go from the same parents photo about 8 weeks ago.

Thats awful :( Have you googled mobile nos etc for extra eevidence?

Hope you find a wee rescue soon. My friend here in ni has a collie rescue at the moment. I don't suppose that would interest you, its the only one I know of at the moment. .

collie wouldn't be my first choice tbh but breed isn't important, it has to be well socialised, good tempered and stock proof.

I will do some more snooping on theGumtree people!
 
Two sets of littermates: first set were easy, second set are gorgeous but can't be off together for a 'normal' woods walk, although they're fine when training and work separately. I think if we'd trained them separately originally, we'd be ok. I will do it again, with separate walks. It can be done.

Don't bother reporting to gumtree, they do nothing.
