Tying dogs up outside shops

Never ever leave an unattended dog either tied up outside a shop or in a parked car,it is an absolute gift to dog thieves.Even the scruffiest old dog can be useful as fighting dog bait.

This.

Also I saw a dog tied up outside Morrisons in Clevedon once. It got a couple of kicks from a passing gang. Nice.

I also recall a case a couple of years ago now where an elderly man left his aged arthritic Collie outside his local shop. It was taken by an utter B******d and if I remember rightly hung from the railings of a bridge and then drowned.

Do not give these scum a chance.

I wouldn't leave my dog anywhere. He is rarely not attached to me when out of the house. I'd come back to him legging it down the road with whatever I had tied him to in hot pursuit if he saw a cat/squirrel/other dog/kid with an ice cream!

I've occasionally done it, my dogs know the stay command pretty well and the local shop has hooks. The area where I walk them is generally pretty safe so I'm not too worried just to pop in for milk.
There is the general advice given to the public especially with children that they shouldn't approach dogs that are tied up anyway so even if the dog did do something that looked 'aggressive' not necessarily bite, you might have a good case on your side.

I used to leave the family dogs outside village shops when iwas a kid. It was the norm. I used to leave our red setter outside small local shops a few years ago ( bout 15 years ago). I would never leave her outside a supermarket, could always see her and only ever nipped in for a couple of minutes. She was also very good with people. However our rescue lab x was way too nervy to tie up, and I think would have nipped anyone who would have approached him. Therefore I would never put him in that situation. Never leave our current two outside a shop. They would whine too much and I think I'm more conscious nowadays of the risks.

Never. Even though mine are worthless mutts, Leviathian:rolleyes:

Even when I went to lurcher shows I never, ever left mine unattended. At a hunt show, an exhibitor was happily chatting to a fellow exhibitor, a person of a specific 'race' unclipped lead from the collar of said exhibitors lurcher and wandered off with it, never to be seen again. Not worth the heartache. Sadly, there are scum everywhere.

I often leave my boy in a sit stay outside small local shops or take away's, but only one's where I can see him at all times. He also isn't one to go anywhere with someone he doesn't know and is road trained and will stop at a curb and wait to be told to cross, yes even if cats etc are on the other side of the road.

Dont let the fact he wouldnt go with strangers lull you into a false sense of security, they will drag, carry etc if they want your dog.:(

Although I am aware people could forcibly take him, as said I don't leave him anywhere I can't see him and I think they would have a job getting him to go! He won't even go with my dad if I'm sight! Even with my dad trying to drag him and he doesn't do bieng picked up unless mummy is with him lol, I think I have a slightly dependant dog!

I sometimes pop to the local shop with Yellow Dog and leave him outside while I get a few bits. He sits and waits for me and so far no one has wanted him tho I've come out a few times to find him washing children! It is a local shop in a small town tho and I'm rarely in there for more than two minutes plus teh tie up point is by the door so I can always see him.

Would never do it. At the moment she's far too young, far too dependent on the family to the point I fear she'ld slip her lead or hurt herself trying to get to us. Plus with her markings (Black collie with one black and white spotted leg) she'd be far too tempting to the local yobs.

I see it all the time but would never do it myself!

I'd be far too worried that someone would steal him, as he IS the cutest dog in the world!

I take him in the shops with me if I have to! Have been asked to leave Tesco's before though!! LOL.

Not outside shops, but I do leave him tied up outside the school gates for often around 15-20 mins. There is a long line of dogs all tied up, for the most part they all sit or lie quietly. My dog knows most of the others!

That said there is a lady who also stops cars coming into the school who don't have passes and she is happy to keep an eye on them all as long as they are well behaved!

I would never leave mine tied up or in a car alone around here, lots of dogs being taken as bait dogs, age, size and breed doesn't matter for that

I have also been known to stand with a random dog outside the local supermarket to let their owners know this could happen. Most say something like 'oh no he's far too old/friendly to be used for that'
