I've owned my 14.1hh 12 year old gelding for seven years. I came back from an hour hack with my friend this afternoon, we walked all the way just stopped off for 15 mins at the pub on the way back for a drink with the warm weather!

When we got back and i got off him, he started scraping his front legs and his back end was going down as if he was going to roll. I shouted my friend over and she said he was tying up (i've never seen or experienced this). We untacked him put a rug on him and walked him round for 15 mins.

I've owned him for seven years and this has never happened before, hes currently in at night and out all day. As hes prone to lami hes only fed a scoop of HI Fi Lite. I was wondering why this has happened and if there is anyway to prevent it happening again?

Any ideas?

Definitely not tying up.
As others have said, he would have been unable to walk at all, upon walking he really wouldn't have been able to lift his back legs and would have shuffled with a very stiff gait (NB: if a horse does tie up, never ever walk them round, they must be imobilised ie: stabled as soon as possible to prevent further damage)....he would also have been visibly distressed and probably profusely sweating...

Sounds like he just wanted a good roll to me!

just endorsing what Royal said - if you think your horse is tying up, you must stop it immediatley and if on a hack, get transport back. You can do a lot of damage by forcing a horse to move who is tying up. Broadly speaking its a protein overload, then not enough exercise or a day off then a lot of exercise. However there are definate gray areas around this and I know its not the only reason!

Hi, iv had alot of experience with tying up, my mare has had syptoms from extreme to very mild, practically unnoticable. This does sound like a strange tying up, but all horses have varying ways of whowing it. My mare does scrape her front feet, but the key thing she does everytime and most horses do is puff, her breathing gets shallow and quick. if its bad enough she will also sweat and with all cases if left to stand for 30sec-1minute then walked on they will look very stiff behind, even if just for the first few strides then if it is only mild they will kind of loosen up a little but still if you stop the stiffness with reoccur.
It sounds more to me like your horse either wanted to roll or had mild colic symptoms. Tying up would not usually occur if he was on a lami diet and if he had not just over overloaded the work for his current fitness level.
If you are still concered that he did tie up, id get the vet to come and take some bloods. That will tell you for definite if he has or not, elevated enzymes in the blood do not start to drop untill about 1-2 weeks after the tie up session.
Hope this helps, i wouldnt panic too much about it unless it happens again.
