I need a jump or forward cut workers saddle for a 14hh new forest, little bit of wither but very much a barrel type.
His flat saddle is Fylde Samantha which i adore! (i know lots of people dont) All the ponies i've used that on go so well.

I don't have a large budget, only £700 + fitting fee.

i want an idea of what to look for. i spent my teen and 20's with a couple of Pessoa jump saddles and i loved how they felt but my ponies now are a different shape to my jumping ponies back then.

I've tried a K&M adjustable jump saddle and hated it, i felt miles away from the pony.

What else is out there in my budget? its like a minefield!

I've spoken to two recently, and they dont seem keen on trying to help with what i want - maybe because i wont be swayed on buying something i didn't set out to buy? i don't know! they seemed to be more geared towards the withered horse types than my natives. i've only used a saddle fitter once in 35 years so this is a new world to me.

Finding AH saddles second hand seems like gold dust

I've just bought a John Whittaker Miami Young Rider and I absolutely love it. I think it's the most comfortable, supportive saddle I've ridden in (aside from an Antares) - my pony is also quite barrel like due to being part Arab.

Alix Carter might be able to help if she covers your area. Always happy to help you find a saddle that works for you and then come back to fit etc. She's recommended saddles to me (and others) from photos but then she does visit pretty regularly too.

Have you any WHP competitors that show natives in your area as perhaps they would have some suggestions for you re saddles that fit barrels.

I have just today got a pre-owned Devoucoux pony saddle for my Dartmoor hill pony. It fits really well & I feel secure on it. It would be over your budget but you might able to track down an older one? It would be worth it as I have tried out 4 or 5 saddles over the past few weeks & this is the best one by far. It's the only one that I would feel secure jumping & cantering in.

Did you try the new or old jump version of the K& M? I am using the old version the Original Jump. It is OK at the moment on my gradually slimming cob x. She started in the silver gullet which was quickly too wide, slimmed to the white and is now in the orange. I don't know how long it will continue to fit.

I have had a K&M jump and hated it with a passion! I now have a Fairfax jump on my natives (probably a bit higher than your budget but 100% worth the stretch), which is an absolute name changer! Feels like I’m 10x closer to my horse.
Had an AH jump saddle also, which also was very close contact and a nice ride, but possibly more expensive now than they used to be.

Ideal or Farrington (same tree I think?) work well on NF. Have used an Ideal impala, but I seem to think smallest is 17 inch so as long as your pony isn’t short backed, they are great for jumping. Another who would speak to Alix Carter, if you are Dorset way ☺️

AH, Fiona Cork or Black Country
If you speak to AH directly they will guide you through doing a template via video and they often have 2nd hand stock you can buy with a 14 day return policy.
Fiona Cork are also super on natives, the WH saddle is really lovely and I know they do a jump version too, again if you speak to them directly they have fitters who travel the country and sometimes carry 2nd hand stock. BC saddles come up often 2nd hand and there is a dedicated fb page. I have a 16.5" grafter WH for sale (euro) if you're interested, was on my NF! Ive been fitted Euro Trees for flat back or Native trees for something more croup high eg like a Sec C. Good luck!

My Connemara is in a John Whitaker Barnsley. Not too expensive new. Lots of eBay as well. Fits a treat and is adjustable. Good luck
Little barrel cob is in this too. My only issue with it is that it's a little too forward cut for my preference/ for a GP so might suit and 2nd hand would be well within budget.

I got it from an independent saddle fitter tho, who carries a range of models including trade in's. Finding that is going to be a better use of time and effort than trying to find a saddle yourself!

Thanks everyone, i think i need to wait and expand my budget as the AH, FCS and BC's are on my want list but all above my budget even second hand. we need a 17" anything shorter would be too small for him - he's not a little pony.

Thanks everyone!!

There's a brilliant facebook page - used specialist native pony/cob saddles for AH 2nd hand saddles - Ive bought 3 from there & even made money on resale .
