Yesterday was at second event of season, Tyrella 1 CNC*.

As the xc started at 10am, I went up the day before to walk the course and I was a bit
crazy.gif
it was very strong for the first of the tyrellas (there is 3 in total) and had lots of huge fences and some rather imposing meaty corners, one on an almost impossible line from a sort of potato feeder fence after coming straight down a steep hill. There was also quite a nasty trakhener in it and related distance pheasant feeder 3 curved strides to a brush skinny up the hill, so feeling rather apprehensive about it. It was also very long for the first tyrella – it was just over 5 minutes!!

The warm up was interesting for the dressage – One horse kicked out at merlin and just missed his head by a whisker
crazy.gif
this then made merlin very protective and turned him wicked
blush.gif
tongue.gif
another horse passed very close and merlin had ears flat back and tried to bite (not successful - I know him to well
wink.gif
) and then lept up sort of bucked within himself
tongue.gif
had to be very strategic on where I worked him in
tongue.gif

Dressage wasn’t dressage, it was rather staying in an arena for 6 minutes
tongue.gif
it was very windy, but making no excuses for myself, I should have rode better as I was a complete muppet. Judge agreed
blush.gif
It was an average test, it was more supple than usual as that’s what I have been working on, and the rein back was good although too many steps – I don’t care about that as he went back!! He was inconsistent in his outline, which is my fault, so any tips on how to make it more consistant? We got an score of 41, which was average in the class, but ho hum, that’s eventing
tongue.gif

After dressage someone came up to us and told me that he was a stunning horse and was a real stamp of an eventer, which made my day
grin.gif

Showjumping track was up to height as usual, and the course builders had made full advantage of the undulating ground
tongue.gif
He warmed up fresh and excited, and tried to attack a brush fence on the ground
tongue.gif
he jumped well, but you know the saying, you wait ages for a bus and then all 3 come at once? Well that was the sj
tongue.gif
no one there when I was there, I warmed up and when ready to jump there was a queue of about 6 people
tongue.gif
was a little ropey as merlin was getting a little cocky jumping, but very pleased to jump clear
laugh.gif

The xc - he warmed up well, and I did lots of canter – halts – canter to get him thinking forwards. So in to the start box and go – except he didn’t
mad.gif
he was in a slow canter so I hit him to make him go off leg and he gave a huge buck
blush.gif

jumped no.1 the roller fine, then fence no.2 which was a brush roller, no.3 was a roller/house thingy then 3 curved strides to no.4, the water jump. Jumped in, then out up a step and 2 strides to a sloping skinny. All fine, tried to get him to go forward again and was treated to another buck, ( I think we scared the people who were walking the course
blush.gif
) but then no.5 was huge roller/brush/table thing which he flew, no.6 pheasant feeder,
no. 7 was the trackener which he was great, didn’t even look at the socking great ditch
laugh.gif

8 was brush fence, 9 was a nice big parallel

long gallop to no. 10 which was a table, 11 was the first of the big corners, very solid and imposing! Merlin didn’t give a second thought, flew over it. 12 was the feeder related distance to skinny skinny, had a little whoopsie in the striding but he was very honest and jumped it
cool.gif
then palisade fine, log at top of hill and then log down hill.

Merlin really got going after fence 9/10, so he was much easier to ride
laugh.gif
got the line from no.16 which was the potato feeder thingy to the corner, he was very good and never wavered off the line or even thought about running out
grin.gif

Then the bank up and down, very long gallop to massive table which jumped great, merlin was really galloping by this stage, over the tiger trap and then logs to finish. He finished full of running, and tried to get rid of me when walking back to lorry by carting off with me
tongue.gif

Very pleased to have only 2 time penalites, as I normally am 20-30 seconds over the time
blush.gif
blush.gif
so no points but I am very happy to go double clear
laugh.gif

So fair enough day, 2 out of 3 phases we got today, so getting better
laugh.gif
and now also qualified for CCI* which is great
laugh.gif

So finished up 12th, which is fair enough considering who was in my class
tongue.gif

The table (was an IN fence as well

Cookies and cream for those who got this far!

I do like your horse a lot - what a star! Well done and great pics.
Can I sneakily ask what front xc boots you use?! Just what I've been looking for, do you like them...?!

Thanks Fiona
laugh.gif
merlin puts up with a lot from me
tongue.gif
such a numpty rider
blush.gif

Autumnrose - Thanks
grin.gif
I am very pleased jumping wise with him - that was his 4th novice
tongue.gif
He is starting to really like his "job"
tongue.gif

I'd love to say that he was upset for the dressage, but he wasnt, it was just my numpty riding
frown.gif
blush.gif
But dressage is a lot easier to get right than the xc, and getting the time at xc novice has been our biggest fall back.

Hattikins - Thanks
laugh.gif
tyrella is lovely on a good day, but horrible on a wet day - it becomes horizontal rain
blush.gif

Thanks Jumptoit
laugh.gif

TSH - thanks
laugh.gif
are you doing tyrella 2? I shall be fence judging in the morning, not riding as doing tyrella 3 and then Ballindenisk - which is getting rather close!!

Thanks Gingerspice, he is a 1 in a million horse - no horse would put up with such a numpty!! He likes jumping too much to notice my little "whoopsies"
blush.gif

They are Escadron (sp) cross country boots, they are great - they have never slipped or rubbed him (touch wood) and they dont hold water
laugh.gif
plus i love the tendon protection as its a long way from his brain to his legs...
tongue.gif

Thanks Claire
laugh.gif
it did actually surprise me how well it rode, i walked it and thought it was quite strong for the first one! But then I havent really done a proper corner EI, and the only trakeners ive done have been those at Loughanmore last year which were jumped out of a slow canter/trot!
tongue.gif

The corner pic is rather tempting tbh...
tongue.gif

thanks Hammiehamlet - he jumps in such an odd way, and height dosent seem to bother him!
grin.gif
Very excited to have CCI* qualification as now can enter Burgie possibly

grin.gif

Thanks Ellie
laugh.gif
merlin and i just click - a lovely feeling! I trust him a lot, and generally leave him to jump his own way
laugh.gif

Gingerspice - i have numpty moments
blush.gif
more frequently than i would like
blush.gif

thanks CM
laugh.gif
hopefully, all being well, will be doing Ballindenisk in a few weeks time
laugh.gif
are you heading down?

I thought that this year would be my last year on him due to me going to uni, but have been offered a place here so fingers crossed i can keep eventing him
laugh.gif

Thanks BE
laugh.gif

tyrella is stunning on the right day
tongue.gif
when the weather is clear enough you can see the Isle of Man
laugh.gif
And the back drop of the mountains and sea always make a pretty picture
laugh.gif

Congratulations - great report and result
smile.gif
Photos are stunning - I'd want to buy them all
wink.gif
Gotta ask, though, what on earth were you looking at in the ones over the first parallel?
