Do the tyres for a Renault master 3.5 ton two horse lorry come in different sort of grips?? Cos twice when taking horses to places where had to drive on to a field I've had to be towed either on or off cos of muddy gateways or field. I just wondered did they make tyres with better grip or tread? Ones on my front wheel drive are legal and got 3 mm tread before need changing, but I am considering getting new now to save getting stuck.

Vans aren't really designed to drive on mud. You can get off-road tyres but you sacrifice road performance. I don't think I'd be wanting to sacrifice road performance especially if you have two horses up as you are right on or over the weight limit.

The Master types are especially poor on slippery ground. They have no drive to the rear wheels and often come with not very grippy types. Also are low slung to the ground (which is great for nice shallow horse friendly ramp) but not good for anywhere potholed.

You can probably improve things by changing tyres but if frequently encountering mud and slippery conditions and the tyres aren't enough you might need something RWD as they are a lot better in such conditions. However this means there is a drive to the rear wheels which means the body and ramp have to be higher up and ramp therefore steeper, so it's a balance of priorities.

I am not overweight, have 1300 kg payload and only take two 15.2 skinny Minnie's . Was weighed at weigh bridge few months ago on way to a comp( volentery ) and had 80kg under. Two horses, £30 of fuel, driver and passenger and two sets of tack. Was just asking about tyres!!!!

Not overweight but still near weight so it is a big ask for a van near its full capacity to deal with mud/slippiness etc.

Good, I was just replying about tyres - you are just under the limit, by the time you've filled up you'll be right on the limit and then relying on tyres that are not best suited for roadwork will put you at a disadvantage. Very good plan to try to stay off the mud.
