OH came in from work a short while ago and told me about an awful accident he saw this morning. It was on the A414 in Hertfordshire. OH was going one way and on the opposite carriageway he saw a trotter and buggy hit from behind by a big 4x4. Christ knows why that happened but the buggy driver was thrown out and the horse and buggy flew up in the air.

Haven't seen anything about it anywhere on t'Internet but would like to know the outcome. I suspect it might be

, at least in part. OH was really upset by it. He said he often sees the horses and buggies trotting along that bit of road, although it is a mightily busy main road.

7am - still pretty dark.
Sorry the combination of rush hour traffic, commuter rat runs and dark mornings is just too dangerous to be exercising horses in, ridden or driven.
Poor horse.

How horrid. But what utter and complete stupidity, being out with a horse in the dark in rush hour traffic.

If you going at "horse" pace you can see, but a driver simply will not see something dark in front of them until too late, and of course they wouldn't be expecting it. It is a bit misty around here too.

I hate to say it but I suspect it was one of the high number of gypsies in this area and they often race their horses up and down the A414 - with little respect for their horses (scared, sweaty, feet pummelled beyond belief, who usually spend their days tethered on waste land nearby) and other road users.

Sorry it is one of my pet hates. Thank god horse was fine, bet it was back doing it again the next day

Almost certainly true. Having seen them beat a terrified 2yo that had flipped onto its back trying to pull the sulky cart (being whipped like mad if it dared to canter then whipped to make it go faster in trot) about its head and then punch my OH when he tried to stop them :-(, and having failed to get any authorities or welfare organisations to take proper action about the continual stream of welfare issues, I hate hearing about stuff like this.

One of the two year olds near us even got its hoof stuck down a metal drain grid, it was so young that its hoof fitted in the gap....

Horses are allowed on dual carriage ways but not Motorways and carriageways with motorway reg.

Well there is a dual carriageway A road down here that has signs up saying no horse drawn vehicles and as far as I know, it's not got motorway recognition

hmm unless it was a council decision??

There is nothing on the highway code and there is a guy who regulary drives his horse down a dual carriageway and hes not been stopped by a policeman. Personally I wouldnt ride on one tho despite my boy being bombproof!!!!!

Only just seen this. I know this area pretty well and can't say I'm suprised. Anyone who knows this area knows that the local gypsy family race and train their trotters on this stretch of road.

I dont know much about the claims of abuse of these horses, I've certainly never witnessed any. My friend bought her coloured mare from them a few years back and never had any problems.
