Hey all!

I'm heading off horse hunting this weekend, going to look at a 7 year old, 17 hand Ukrainian Riding Horse as a dressage, hopefully future GP horse.

I had never heard of the breed, at least not here in the states. The owner imports them. The horse is stunning, doing excellent work on the video, looks like a typical very nice warmblood to me.

I googled it, and I see they are a cross of TB, Trak and Hano lines, looks like.

Anyone know anything else more about them?

I'm super excited about this horse, but at this point it could be a dancing donkey as long as it has some talent, lol. I'm no breed snob.

Hi,

Mine's a Ukrainian Riding Horse x Hanoverian, he was also imported. Like you say typical warmblood type.

I would say he was definately a late starter and took a while to mature, I bought him as a six year old but more like a 4 yro, once we got him going though he was lovely if a little quirky at times. Nice paces and a huge jump, not the most straight forward of rides but I'm only a novice really!

Unfortunately he injured himself before his eventing career got underway, but he'd already had some success at show jumping and dressage and was always quite bold cross country.

A few traits - he was really scared of men when I first got him, it's impossible to know what their handling has been like but I guess that could be said of any horse. Has a total needle phobia and is dangerous to inject, really scared not just naughty. And I noticed when I first got him he didn't seem to know what road markings or drain hole covers were and eyed them rather suspiciously before prancing over them, I assume he'd not done much hacking in this country and not come across these in the Ukrain.

He's 17 now and is a lovely boy to handle and enjoying a wonderful retirement.

Hope the viewing goes well, would love to see some pictures if you go ahead and buy him.

I almost bought one - didn't as x rays showed issues on the horse. But yes they are a modern wb breed based on hanoverians and trakehners and tbs , and have produced some decent dr horses inc some russian and ukrainian team horses. I speak a little russian and can read cyrillic alphabet so if you need some basic help with passport details happy to help.

Hi,

The breed is better known as 'Ukrainian warmblood'. Typical Ukrainian warmblood horse is a dope on a rope. IME, they are usually very sweet and honest, and will try their hearts out for you. Dressage is their forte, although there are some 'jumping' bloodlines.

The ones with a fair share of Hanoverian or Westfalen blood may be heavier and slower to mature, the ones with a lot of thoroughbreds in their pedigrees may be a wee bit tricky.

I did quite a bit of research on Ukrainian warmbloods - bloodlines, prominent sires et al. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me:)
