Hi I have a pony who had grade 4 ulcers around 5-6 years ago( full history known thanks to fabulous previous owners). He use to be a show pony and been taken up and down the country for shows plus went quite intense schooling which could brought ulcers bless him. He is ulcers free now but I consider and treat him as ulcer prone and with us he’s leading relaxed lifestyle at least I hope with no shows but odd unaffiliated dressage, arena hires, hacking, weekly lessons and schooling. We vary his work so when in ménage we do poles, raised poles, jumping, schooling as he gets bored with same old thing.
He’s always struggled with spring grass and has a bit of ouchy tummy. He’s not sensitive to touch, rugging, brushing but he’s bit sensitive to girth, won’t do anything just turn his head and looks.
He’s on pink powder senior(he’s 12 but senior contains probiotic) thunderbrook chaff, salt and equinitritive no more nerves(not spooky type but sometimes anxious or worried) so to minimise his anxiety he’s on that and that helps him a lot.
I’ve been feeding him horsehage Timothy haylage along soaked hay (native and on forever diet) but I’ve read you shouldn’t really feed ulcer prone equine haylage as it’s more acidic.
I also started feeding him mint to help with ouchy tummy as per vet recommendations. Vet also said to try aloe Vera juice/gel.
I’m looking for overall supplements that would help us manage seasonal diet changes and maintain his tummy.
Pony can’t have soya, cereal, molasses and alfalfa( first two thanks to previous ulcers and last two goes to his head)
I looked at protexin acid ease but it does contain alfalfa meal.
Many thanks

Hi, there are probably loads of ways to help an ulcer prone pony.
Here is mine (again, as I have listed it before)
Pony is a 19 year old 14.2 Connemara, he is a very good do-er. He is hacked usually 3 times a week, does very occasional lessons and fun rides in summer
He is Never fed haylage. It gives him FWS.
A large net of hay, I use a Nibbleze net to slow down the equine Hoover, when in.
Twice a day a mug full of Allen and Page fast fibre, soaked, with salt and Senior Pink Powder added.
He is out at night in summer and in the day in winter.
That’s it.
I am considering the addition of the 3 oily herbs as has been recommended here but am being cautious at the moment.
I think the best thing is trial and error. It took 18 months to find this is OK at the moment. Things may change of course as they always do with horses.
Good luck

Thank you. I might have a look at fast fibre! Which herbs are those if I may ask?
