My lad was diagnosed with grade 2 ulcers in the lower gut (not hind gut)

Nearly 3 weeks on he has gone from refusing to trot to now doing some canter and even popping a few small jumps
However after a while he will suddenly start to refuse to canter and kick out/buck, which was how he originally showed something was wrong
Now I am not sure whether it's possible that after working for say 35 mins that it would suddenly start hurting again or if he is just testing
Yesterday he was fine until he stood still for a few mins chatting. He was on when asked to walk and trot but as soon as asked for canter he refused, then when made too he did his kick/buck and then carried on no problems and seemed happy enough

He is not due to be scoped for another 3 weeks.
I obviously don't wish him to be sore but I can't afford him to learn that I'd he does this he will stop work as this kick out/buck is of the seriously unseating kind even tho he is not trying to get me off, just protest

Any ideas pls

Is he getting a feed prior to being worked, one of mine was scoped but had only one small ulcer, he showed obvious signs being girthy, grumpy etc so although he does not have them I have changed his diet and he is treated as though he has. He gets fed ad lib haylage so is always worked on a fairly full tum, if he works too long after a feed I give him a half sized feed just before work and at competitions am now feeding between phases. This has made so much difference, he is no longer at all girthy and performing better, so I think he was just affected by the acid building up in his tummy although it did not cause actual ulcers.

In answer to your question, he may not be fully healed, he may be building up too much acid during work time or it may be memory of pain and just the slightest splash causes him to get tense again.

He is still on GG so not sure if I should feed anything else along side it?

I am starving him for 30 mins. Giving GG. Starving for another 30 mins. Then half feed and hay then tack up 20/30 mins later. He has improved following this. Interesting you think he could have built up acid again in the 30 or so mins he has been ridden.
Will perhaps time the sessions now and see if there is a link although may not show as I would expect/hope he should continue to improve

It is supposed to stop most of the production of acid so there should not be much in there so soon after being given gastroguard but is would be worth trying slightly different routines to see what works best for him. What feed is he getting, that may be the key.

Dab. Thanks. He doesn't show any indication of hind guts ulcers that I can see anyway
BP he is getting top spec lite chaff and a little speedie beet with aloe Vera juice
I will probably switch to something with more Alfa a when this has gone
Also in his main feed he gets spilled lite balancer
I will play with the routine a little
He is coming in at night at least for the next few days as its going cold now
