I seem to recall that someone on here was putting together a list of the results of various different ulcer treatment supplements, based on some research they were doing, but can't remember who. I'm looking at what I can use on one of mine and just wanted to get a bit of a heads up on what works/ what doesn't, etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I use Gastroplus on my boy. He's got grade 2 ulcers (diagnosed three weeks ago). Its a completely natural supplement which contains amongst other things, ginger and turmeric. It comes from the States but there's a company called equine science who sell it here. Racing yards are beginning to use it too now.

What I have noticed with my boy is he seems more relaxed, he's loving his food now and he's a joy to tack up and mount. I've only had him eight months and looking back, he had them before I bought him. He's 7 yrs old and thankfully I'm able to keep him out 24/7 and his diet is no sugar, no carbs and is forage based. I would suggest you also look at diet too. Try simple systems - give Jane a call. She's a nutritionist and extremely helpful. There are obviously other outfits who would fit the same description!

Good luck. PM if you want a further help.

My ex-racer was scoped with ulcers. Grade 2 pyloric. Treated with GG, antibs & antesepsin or whatever it's called. No difference on rescope. Tried GP. No difference. Tried ranitidine from the chemist & gaviscon double action on advice of equine communicator - very very noticeably better 3 days later. Gone from being a borderline PTS as so depressed & fed up to storming round jumping clinics in the space of 3 months.

We now do a 2 weekly review with Anne Dee the communicator so I can keep on top of it & find out how he's feeling. We just did one at lunchtime. I have to change his feed now as he needs more energy now that he's back in proper work. Yeah I might be a nutcase, but I'm a nutcase whose horse has avoided PTS & is getting better every day!

i've got Spike on Slippery Elm, having decided that GG was not a possibility for financial reasons. He lives out and is on a hi fibre diet, with no cereals. Since he started on the Slippery Elm, he has put weight on, and stopped trying to rip chunks out of my backside when I do the girth up, so I can only conclude that he is feeling better!

Haven't been on here much recently catembi but remember your posts when you were at your wits' end with this, and it's great to see you seem to have found a solution - you must be so relieved! Just out of interest, how much ranitidine and gaviscon are you using?

I got some 150 mcg tabs from ebay (2 bottles of 90 for £15) & give 2 twice a day, plus 2 gaviscon twice a day. And a yakult in the evening. Anne says that this regime is agreeing with him very well. However, he needs a higher energy feed. Atm he's on Healthy (or is it Happy?) Tummy and the Rowan Barbary Solution mash. We are probably going to replace the HT with the Dodson & Horrell fibre based comp mix & see what happens.

It is fab having our regular reviews as I can try stuff & then get proper feedback on how he feels & what's working. So I was wondering about getting some Equishure as he's so much better, but has plateaud, whereas Anne said that his tummy is pretty well there now, both stomach area (ulcers) & hind gut, but he's not getting enough energy from his food.

Interestingly, he used to get the most awful gut noises. I know that horses' guts are s'posed to make a noise & that it's worse if they don't, but in 40 years I've never heard anything like it. It was a really explosive rumble that you could hear from the next stable. They were quite startling. But now they have subsided to sounding normal. He is also doing a good job of shedding his coat, whereas last year he still had some manky old coat left in July/Aug. He is really shiny too.

He is so much livelier as a 'person'. He looks over his door now instead of hiding, wants to interact, tries to groom me etc instead of being dull, is out n about in the field instead of being in the shelter all the time. It is good to see.

Thank you so much everyone.

Catembi, really interested in your animal communicator. I've tried one before but can't say I've had great results, though of course they are all different. I'd be interested in giving that another go, though - could you share her details? (or pm me if you prefer)? Thanks :)

Anne Dee http://www.annedee.co.uk/

I started to use her in sheer desperation as Catembi was seriously ill from protein losing enteropathy & I was literally trying *everything* to try & save him. Since, I've had more sessions with both Adrian & Trevor. It is the most uncanny experience. I am a very pragmatic & sensible person, & I totally believe from the bottom of my heart that she definitely CAN talk directly to the horse. She knows so much stuff, & can answer very direct qs such as why is Trev such a PITA at clinics & why he bit me the other day, and can also describe so accurately how he's feeling. The way the horse interacts with the phone is simply beyond spooky. There is far too much to type, but I could give example after example after example of things she's answered or diagnosed.

I really feel as if my life has been enriched by the experience, and I am certainly feeling a lot more confident regarding Trev's ongoing management. I wish that I could do it too, but I'm the sort of person who works things out logically & I don't have any sort of insight!
