Sorry I know this has been done to death but would like some advice.

A friends 4 yr old has just been diagnosed with gastric ulcers after investigation for spasmodic colic, however he is in very good condition isn't very stressy.

Now I am wondering if my 5 yr old could have them, he is out for around 5 hours a day at the mo has plenty of hay and is fed alfa a oil & calm & condition. However he objects to the saddle which does fit, by picking up back leg and grinding teeth but is fine once it is on. He also grinds his teeth if you squeeze to hard with your legs.
He is also a poor doer.
All that said he has a good appetite always eating and luckily hasn't had colic.

What do you think?

Also can good management and coligone or u guard cure ulcers or do you need a course of gastroguard from the vet?

Would giving coligone or u guard hurt if the horse doesn't have ulcers?
Where do you get it from and at what cost.

If you think your 5 yr old might have them then get him scoped and blood tested. Theres no point treating something if you are not sure if he has it or not.

it sounds to be like his back hurts when you put his saddle on - when did he last have the physio and get his saddle checked?

He had a new saddle fitted in December and I had the chiropractor out in October.
I don't think his back is actually hurting it may just be that he is a little cold backed or sensitive as he didn't like having his rugs put on at the beginning of winter but is fine with that now.

I am only curious about ulcers now as they seem to affect so many horses and have a variety of symptoms. I will speak to my vet but am a little reluctant to have him scoped at the moment as he hates needles ect and Im probably panicking overly so I thought it could be sensible to try him on a gastric supplement and see if that helps at all. Only if this isn't dangerous of course.

Just want to gather more info on ulcers & treatment so I know what to look out for really.

Hi Coen,

try him on Coligone - its fab stuff and helps with no end of gastric issues. I am sure my elderly retired lad would not be with me now if it was not for coligone.

Give it a go - its really excellent stuff!

Having had a look in to Coligone I think it is definately worth a try, I wasn't sure if it was ok to use if the horse didn't have a confirmed gastric problem but have been assured it is so, it can only help. Thanks for the advice
